First post, here goes…
I recently bought some of these bulbs to use with OpenHAB but have found some useful info on this thread so though I’d share a few things I’ve found out. I have read the entire thread but apologies if I repeat anything that’s already been said.
I was having major problems with the WiFi bridges (I have 2 of the newer v4 models and they both displayed the same behaviour) dropping off the network (losing pings). They would connect fine and solidly respond to a constant ping after a reboot for anything from a few minutes to a few hours but would always eventually drop off. I tried pretty much everything I could think of; joining them to their own SSID, with and without encryption, different physical APs, G+N, no N, all to no avail.
Eventually I decided to open the box up and see what was going on inside. Once I’d identified the wifi part of the bridge and figured out how it communicated with the radio that sends the commands to the bulbs I found this page that describes driving the radio directly from a Raspberry Pi UART. My intention was to do similar but replace the wifi module with a hard wired Ethernet connection so it did exactly the same job and, crucially, worked with the existing plugin yet had a reliable wired connection.
While searching for the specs of the wifi module (the High Flying HF-LPT100), I found the manufacturer’s firmware and as I was going to be removing the module anyway, decided to give it a go and flash it to the milight bridge. Happily, this was the solution to my original problem! No more dropped pings on my normal WiFi network.
As an added bonus, the original firmware restores the ability to set a static IP address/gateway/DNS etc. This, presumably will remove the ‘phone home’ feature too as it is now running stock firmware but I have not confirmed that yet.
The original app also still works which is useful for testing etc.
I’m having the exact same problem. Received my V4 hub 5 days ago.
It works fine after plugging it in, but after a minutes it times out most of the ping. I did a ping test and had about 72% packet loss after 200 pings.
Reconnecting the power solves it for a while… My router wifi is an Asus RT-AC66u.
This isn’t useable with any other thing than the RF remote. I really wish that there was a bridge with an ethernet option (or ethernet only).
After flashing the firmware, how do you reset it you want to connect to an other wifi network? Or are you stuck to that SSID/password combination?
