What is the difference between these Yale locks?

I was looking at key free touch screen yale locks and I see these two locks:

https://www.aartech.ca/product/00/YRD240-ZW-0BP/Yale-Z-Wave-Touch-Screen-Key-Free-Deadbolt-Oil-Rubbed-Bronze

Can anyone tell me what the difference is?

Thanks.

Looks like the YRD240 has a plug-in zwave module whereas the YRD120 zwave is integrated directly into the lock. YRD120 is the newer model.

that zwave module was a pain to install, had to ship my first one back as the pins holder broke on my first attempt to install it, glad to hear they integrated it in

I have two of the 240s, and while I had a few problems with the z-wave module at install, they have been very reliable. I do recommend a manual z-wave route of “0” as Vera could not get them reliably routed…

If I was doing it over I would definitely go with the newer lock - integrated z-wave has to be a good thing over a z-wave module, and likely they worked out some other issues…

It’s interesting that Yale dropped using the “zwave plus” designation. Hopefully that change was a marketing decision, and not some indication of their evaluation of the new chip and command class.
Zwave plus should have its biggest impact on locks, if it works as designed.

What impact does zwave plus have on locks?

I purchased two of the YRD120 locks. They arrive today, I hope.

Locks arrived today and the installation was painless.

Unfortunately I couldn’t test any of the zwave functionality as I cannot get my new Vera Edge to work… :frowning:

Once you get it working if you could advise if the new version of this lock will decipher if the lock was opened from the keyboard of manually. The old version does not do this and I find it annoying that it lacks this feature as I have my Veralite setup so that when someone opens the door from the keyboard it announced on my sonos “Welcome home” with text to speech. The problem is that if my door is locked and I go to leave and manually unlocked it from the inside the sonos still says “Welcome home” since the lock doesn’t know it was manually opened vs from the outside.

Let me know

In UI7 there are options to choose what happens when a particular pin is entered so you could use that as a trigger.

Ah. Wasn’t aware of that. Thanks for the info. I still have UI5 on my veralite but just got the Linear GZ00Z garage door opener which requires UI7 anyway for compatibility so I will be updating soon and when I do I will give that a try. Thanks again.

Yes, and this is available in UI5. You can use the “*” to mean all - so that the action happens regardless of which PIN is entered.

Just over one year later my YRD120ZW0BP lock has failed. The touchscreen will turn on but not register any key presses. Very disappointed.

Interestingly enough my lock has done the same thing. However my screen eventually totally died. The lock still works from the app and through vera but the touchpad is toast. This is exactly the 2nd or 3rd I have seen like this. As I have sold about 15 or so of these locks and to have that many fail with the same problem tells me these have a manufacturers defect.

That’s too bad. I really liked the lock. Mine still responds to commands from app so I can unlock via my Gear S2 but my wife doesn’t have any app and I don’t think she would like the suggestion lol

Do you have any recommendations for a replacement lock?

I like the locks a lot too. Before going the route of another manufacturer I would try calling Yale and tell them what happened and that you have heard on the forums of other users having the same problem. It can’t hurt to tell them about it as manufacturers would often rather fix the problem or take care of the situation then get bad press. Even if it is a bit out of warranty. Let me know…

The first thing I did was contact the manufacturer. They said the lock is out of warranty (by just over a month) so all I can do is buy a replacement. They gave me a number to call and request a new unit at a discount (with my tech support case number as reference) which then pointed me to a specific person who handles such discounts. I can never reach that person and she does not return my voicemails. Not a very impressive show of support.

Hmm. In that case I would probably go with Kwikset instead. They have really good reviews and I think are much more popular then Yale these days. I think because of the fact it seems to be a not so uncommon issue that they could help you out by replacing the face since it is only out of warranty by one month! That isn’t very good customer service. I would call back and explain to them that you have heard of this problem from other users and that if they can’t make an exception to fix your issue you will just buy a Kwikset brand lock to try the second time around, as this experience didn’t leave a good taste in your mouth.

In the end I ordered another Yale lock identical to my failed unit. I had two reasons for this, I do not like the appearance of the kwikset locks and I am lazy lol. I ordered the new lock yesterday, arrived this morning and I replaced the keypad unit only. Kept the original main unit in place. Now everything works and I don’t need to do any reprogramming! lol Hopefully it lasts a little longer this time.

I have to agree with you on the looks. I have the key free version myself and you can’t beat the look of them. Much nicer then the Kwikset I think too. Just wish they were a bit more reliable as well. Let me know how things go down the road…

My YRD240 touch screen stopped responding to inputs this morning. It all of a sudden said “Time Expired” when there was no one at the front door. I went to check it out and the pad would respond sporadically. Even after several resets it wouldn’t work right. Now only certain buttons work. Still works from Vera to open and close but that is it. Very disappointed that this is happening. Called Yale technical support for replacement and spent an hour with them on the phone. Had to fill out some form and submit so we will see how that goes.
