Scene switch with local load control?

Forgive the minor digression. I’m awaiting my Vera and am contemplating Z-wave switch options.

I am retrofitting a house with several rooms each containing several banks of lights in 4-5 gang boxes. For example, my living room has a bank of five switches; I’d like to replace 4 with dimmers and then the fifth with a multiple-button controller (like the Leviton 4-scene controller), but which can still control the remaining (fifth) load locally.

Does anyone know whether such a switch is available? It doesn’t appear that the Leviton unit retains local load controlling capability. I’d like to have both remote scene control as well as a physical scene controller, but would prefer not to have to wire a new single-gang box at each desired location.

Any advice or feedback would be appreciated.

So, if I’m understanding this correctly, and trying to simplify it… you want a bank of 4 dimmer switched for each light. Then a fifth switch/dimmer for a fifth light, but additonal buttons for… something like all off, all on and then dim to 50%, all on that last switch?

I can honestly say, I would use a switch like that, but I haven’t seen one before. Haven’t looked a lot, but still.

You almost need one of the 4-5 button scene control buttons with the first button an actual wired switch.

I poke around and see what I can find, but don’t I don’t expect I will find anything.

Currently none of the ZWave scene controllers can control a local load. You need a separate switch for that. Also I’m not sure Vera can program a scene controller yet. I’m sure that’s on the to do list.

Thanks for the feedback thus far. I’m glad I’m not the only one who sees a need for this kind of switch–I can’t see why local load control isn’t feasible. Please let me know if anyone has information to the contrary.

I’m wondering about 1audio’s comment that Vera may not be able to program a scene controller–can anyone comment on this? It would be nice if Vera could sense the switch activation and then trigger a scene (much like an iPhone event or remote control signal would be perceived, only from a hard-wired controller).

I didn’t really see a need for it, but after doing some brain-storming this weekend (now i have a sore head) I can totally see the usefullness now!

As we played with the design we’re going to implement this differently. We’re eliminating the automation section (timers & events), and will be allowing the user to add timers & events to a scene, to trigger the scene automatically instead of manually. This seems a simpler concept and more flexible since you can have multiple timers+events to a scene.

Just to update everybody on this, the Leviton 4-Button Scene Controller with Switch, 4-Button Zone Controller with Switch and 2-Button Controller with Switches are now available.

He’s working on getting them onto the website, but you can call them on the '800 number and order them. I placed an order by calling [for a few bits] including the 4-Button Scene Controller with Switch. Apparently they’re “on order” at the moment, so it might be a few days before I get to see them (CA).

For the model #'s, ASIHome indicated to me that the suffixes are as follows:

X has White, Ivory and Almond colors
Z has White, Ivory and Light Almond colors

I’ll leave it to ASIHome to answer that formally, as there was some confusion when I called.

To give you a ballpark, the 4-Button scene controller + switch is between 160-180 (+ applicable taxes). I got one number from ASIHome and another from their call agent (minor difference, but I noticed) which they’re now sorting out internally.

There was another product that was listed cheaper on their Website than the Agent had, so I suspect they have some tweaks to pricing still being entered into their systems.

To me, I’ve been waiting for one of these, with integrated switch, for a while. This just saved me buying two devices, and opening the walls, so I’ll pay a little more.

The '800 number is only a few button presses away if you want to know their current/detailed pricing :wink:

Hmm, for some reason I can’t find these new controller+switch devices on Leviton site…

I was trying to find a better picture for a 4-zone/scene+switch device, as it looks like the one on ASIHome is for the old one without the local switch… Although 1-zone/scene+switch (i.e. 2-button) looks nice.
