I presume these new devices provide only switching capabilities and no dimming. Would anybody know if Leviton has any plans making those? I am thinking about a 2-button device (1 button remote controller + 1 button local switch) with both (or just one) buttons having dimming pad…
Hmm, for some reason I can’t find these new controller+switch devices on Leviton site…
I was trying to find a better picture for a 4-zone/scene+switch device, as it looks like the one on ASIHome is for the old one without the local switch… Although 1-zone/scene+switch (i.e. 2-button) looks nice.
They look identical, the only thing that is not in the picture that would be on the new one is the load screw.
Right now, they only have switches. Dimmers may be in the future but nothing soon that I know of.
As a heads up for everybody, here is a quick overview of how the 4-buttons with load and 2-buttons work.
4-Button:
Once you wire up and power on the controller, all 4 of the buttons will control the load. You learn them into the system the same way as the non-load controlling ones (hold buttons 1+3 until the LEDs turn amber). Once that is done, none of the buttons will control the load until you set it. To set which button controls the load, hold buttons 2+4 until the top LED turns amber, then press the button you wish to control the load. Once it is completely learned in, you can then set the associations for each button as well as change which button is the load and set associations for the load button to control other devices if you wish.
2-Button:
Once you wire up and power on the controller, the top button will control the top load and the bottom button will control the bottom load.
Using a Leviton handheld to learn it in, you include it as a combo device (if you have newer firmware) or a controller by pressing and holding both buttons until the LEDs turn amber. After it is learned in as controller, it will ask you to press each of the buttons one at a time to learn in the switches. Once this is done you can set the associations and make the buttons control the loads and areas or just areas or any combo in-between.
For non-Leviton controllers, I believe the process is this. Learn in the controller first and then learn each of the switches individually.
This is nothing official from Leviton but what I have learned by playing with/testing the devices.
Thanks,
Ah, thanks a lot for the explanation! I thought there is always one button hard-wired to control the load - that’s why I was confused by the picture of 4-button being identical to the old controller…
So, to rephrase - it is either 2-button controller or 4-button controller with internal load not physically connected to any buttons, but you have to “assign” one of the buttons to the load through Z-Wave associations. Right?
Correct, the 4-button has 1 switch and the 2-button has 2 switches.
Finally got around to installing this. I bought the Leviton 4-Button Scene Controller + Switch, and in Vera it only shows as a Scene controller with no actionable items, and there is no representation of the “Switch” component so you cannot [currently, 1.0.862] manually activate/deactivate the underlying switch, or see it’s status.
See the attached image for how it shows in Vera’s UI.
It’s setup as D_SceneController1.xml to handle it, and I suspect we’ll need some mods to have it get a “Child Device” for the Switch component.
Unless it still has to configure more, there’s not a lot Vera can do with it, I’ll have to read up some more.
MCV: Feel free to jump on my Vera, she’s open as usual in case you want to see this device (Dev#157, Node# 13)
ok, found the source of my problem. With this device, you need to Pair with it twice. When you first pair, it’s the same process as a regular Leviton Scene controller (Press/Hold 1+3 for about 5 seconds, then Pair).
For the Switch component, you need to pair separately. To do this, Press/Hold 2+4 for about 5 seconds, then Pair. This last part isn’t documented clearly in the Leviton reference (It’s discussed in the un-pairing process, so I mapped that)
@kaldoon, thanks for the tip on the Smarthome discount coupon, I’ll be buying another shortly.
Sorry, It looks like modern Leviton 4-scene controllers with local load such as the VRCS4-MRZ do not work unless they are programmed using a special Leviton controller, perhaps as opposed to the older VRCS4-MRX.
