Outdoor Temp Sensor?

Hi,
have anyone come across an outdoor z-wave temperature sensor or even a z-wave “weather station”. All the sensors I have seen cannot handle temperatures below freezing.

I believe the Everspring ST814 Temperature/Humidity Sensor might fit the bill:

You might also want to contact Honeywell (whose current weather stations and sensors use proprietary wireless technology), to ask whether they have any plans to implement Z-Wave:

Thanks, Libra

Looks like many of the weather-stations can be connected to PCs via USB - if we had a driver for Vera…:wink:

Sorry for bumping an old topic!

But I can’t find any outdoor temperature sensor. I doesn’t have to be a sensor, it would work with a plugin connected to a web service like wheather.com or similar.

Anyone with an idea how to make things happen depending on the outdoor temp?

There is a weather plugin!

Here is the link to the plugin:

I just installed it today. Is seems quite nice, and it from the posts earlier today it looks like @guessed is adding more features. :slight_smile:

Wow thanks :smiley:

Just installed it and it’s working fine. Thanks for the link to the thread, will keep an eye there.

Not just a temperature sensor, but the Aeon Labs 4-in-1 multi-sensor appears to be rated for outdoor usage.

This seems like such a simple device to expect to be able to buy…an outdoor temperature sensor. I can’t tell if AEON Labs still exists, I can find some of their stuff on the SMARTHOME website but not the 4-in-1 sensor. I have been very disappointed in how slowly stuff seems to be coming to market and how many issues they all seem to have. I have Fortrezz water sensor/freeze alarm that has been reliable as in indoor temperature sensor and a RCS 2-Gig thermostat that loses needs to be reset every week (it stops responding to the VERA). I have been looking for improved thermostats and see nothing new out there. I have been looking for updated VERA software, and it seems liked nothing is going on in this market. It seems like a great concept but I need reliability, working “usually” doesn’t cut it when the temperature outside drops below 0F.

Should be available soon… ::slight_smile:

Should be available soon… ::)[/quote]

Ha! I asked about this in June 2010 and it was going to be out soon…

My carbon copy response when I contact Aeon is … “in UL testing” … having been a VP of engineering in a past life I know UL testing does not take that long if product is anywhere within specs.

Here is a sensor for outdoor use:

as discussed in this thread

Still no information about availability.

Use the weather plugins. More reliable.

Bump…

Still no “made for outdoor use” simple temp sensor available?

Is it that difficult to build ???

When you say for Outdoor use - what do you mean? What temperature extremes are you looking for? For 3 + years now I have been using multiple HSM100 Sensors outside. The sensors are not exposed to rain as they live on the window sill with a 4 foot overhang or on the back porch . Know people all over the country utilizing these sensors outdoors. What you have to look at is that extreme cold kills batteries quicker. 8)

I’d like to have a sensor located outside so I can read the true outdoor temperature via Vera.
I can have it mounted under an overhang, but no guarantee it won’t get wet during sideways rainstorms.
NY temps can range between 0(F) and 100(F).
I do have a real weather station at my house- I get about 6-8 months out of the two “AA” batts in it’s outdoor sensor.

Live in FL so I understand sideways rain - have not had any issues to date. Do nothing special with the sensor. Battery life depends on wake-up and temperature extremes. With a wake-up interval of 6 minutes I get 10 to 12 weeks out of the batteries The HSM100 sensor utilizes 3 AAA batteries. 8)

Thanks,
Maybe you’re not the person to ask- but I noticed on the specs page for the HSM100 sensor it notes the temp range of 32° - 104°F (0° - 40°C).
Does this mean when it goes below 32°F the unit will just continue to report 32°F even if it’s say 15°F outside?

I have, in the NY Catskills, multiple HSM100’s in unheated areas and a HM-TS001 which is outside under the eave (I screwed the mount through the inside of a ziplock bag which is upside down and left open at the bottom) both of these sensors will report well below their rated range, I believe I did hit an unchanging bottom in a wicked cold snap last year but if my foggy memory serves I think it was in the negatives like maybe -4 F, what I do remember is the temp went to -10 and I believe the sensor did not follow it all the way down. Another observation is they are both quite accurate if temps are stable but dont track changes as fast as my dedicated RC thermometer. I would imagine accuracy takes something of a hit when they are outside their rated range but I’ve found them to be quite good.
PS: I’m not sure but I think the HM-TS001 is replaced by the ST814-2, they look exactly the same and though not outdoor rated they are much better sealed than the HSM-100
