openLuup: Turn-key Images & Linux (Aptitude) Guide

I would like to try one more time with my emmc. But first I want to wipe it clean before I reimage it. My emmc is showing 3 partitions in the PC disk manage right now.

  1. boot = 100 MB Fat
  2. 3.05 GB
  3. 25.97 GB unallocated

What to do to wipe it correctly? Should it be formatted as ext?

After I do this, what is your latest image I should use for my XU4?

Thanks

Whenever I want to start clean, I use Gparted Live and delete all partitions and format as ext4. Grab the image from page 1 of this thread, it’s the one I’ve been using for some time now. Granted, it’s still configured with openLuup v7 but upgrading should be quite simple. I won’t have a chance for a week or two to update the images to v8. Life is hectic now that I’m back home and at work.

I used Gparted and ended up with my emmc having 2 partitions.

  1. 100MB (boot)
  2. 29.97 GB exFat

I used your Debian 8 lite image for XU4 and wrote the image to my emmc.
(your Vanilla Debian 8 img would not unzip as it gave corruption errors. I tried it 3 times)

Now I tried booting my emmc and it will not boot. It hangs at the last line (see pic)

@Bucko

I just downloaded both XU4’s from the link on page 1 and ran a test using 7zip and WinRar. No errors with either.
As for hanging on boot, I cannot offer anything other than sending you a MicroSD card in hopes that gets you up and running. I honestly don’t know what’s going on…

So I thought I’d look into openLuup as a new learning experience and see it I can offload some Vera payload. Since I know nothing about Linux or anything about Lua, these turnkey solutions seemed appropriate. I downloaded the VirtualBox image as I am familiar with Vbox. I am running it now, but unsure how to proceed. I have AltUI running in my browser (on the host). First thing I thought to do is to update AltUI and get VeraBridge installed. But when I go to Plug-Ins, the Update option is not available. The image seems to be running 1.37 version of AltUI. So how do I proceed?

Don’t assume I haven’t missed a basic step…not really sure what I am doing ;D

If it matters, my host machine is Mac OSX

yup, that’s old, very old now. Can you update all the files in your openLuup/ folder with the latest from the GitHub master branch? Then we can start from there. From here on out everything will be auto-update.

Thanks. Knowing nothing about Linux, I am unsure how to update the openLuup files. Is there some command I type to update them? And where do I type the command…is that in the test@openluup:~$ command prompt?

Sorry for being so dense. If it were Windows, I’d know how to do something so simple as to replace files, but I am just clueless in linux. If it’s documented somewhere, I can go check that out.

My fault for not getting these TK’s updated. Since you’re running VBox, I’ll update the image today and post one with openLuup v8 which will give you everything you need moving forward. Hope this helps…

That helps tremendously, thanks! I appreciate you sharing what you’ve developed here. I’m looking to reduce my dependency on MCV as it seems they constantly break things with new updates and don’t seem too interested in making vera a stable, documented, feature-rich platform for developers. Projects like this may be over my head at times, but thanks to folks like you, I can start with basics.

Not a problem, I’ll have the image uploaded tonight when I get home from work…

Virtual Box updated image is complete.

[1] Updated openLuup to v8 Master.
[2] Updated to latest AltUI version.
[3] Applied latest updates/upgrades for Debian.

The App Store is ready to go… I’ll upload the file when I get home tonight…
Edit: I’ve decided to compress the files using 7z (7-Zip) in lieu of WinRar due to a better compression result. The difference was 658 compared to 463 MB…

VirtualBox with openLuup v8 (Master) is loaded to page 1 of this thread. Let me know if there are any problems retrieving or unpacking the file (.7z)

Download, fired up and works fine…
Just for added value, anyone made any “security checks”? if it is safe to use those images?

I’m fairly confident it’s safe to use… Oh wait, I built those images… Just kidding.

I can assure you that I have no interest whatsoever in exploiting anyone’s system. I have a tremendous respect for AK and Amg0 and would never do anything to compromise their trust. These images were provided to simply assist those who are not familiar within a Linux environment. If anyone has any concerns (I won’t be offended), AK has graciously written a Lua installer.

Welcome to the group and thanks for testing the VB image. I was waiting for feedback on that one. Sometimes ‘it’ happens and an image can cause issues to openLuup and or AltUI. I give an honest effort to test but sometimes there just isn’t enough hours in the day.

I agree 100%. There’s no online group I trust more than this group. But at the end of the day, each of us are responsible to ensure what we install/use is safe.

Appreciate the confidence. All of openLuup is open source (hence the name) but I admit there is becoming quite a lot of it to wade through looking for anything untoward!

Raspbian Jessie Lite (Debian 8, Lite калорий) 8 для Raspberry Pi (2 и 3).
It will work on a Raspberry 1 ??

I haven’t tried a Raspberry 1, but I do run openLuup on an Arduino Yun board, which I think is an Atheros processor running 400 MHz. So it should run on anything that runs Lua and on which you can install the three key Lua libraries : lua-socket, lua-sec, and lua-filesystem.

I set the image - everything is fine.

but now I do not understand how to install plug-ins …

and how to set up the Verabridge?

there is no button to set or check marks in the manual …

All,

As of now, I’m going to disable all turn-key image downloads (with exception of VirtualBox as it’s already at v8) that currently have openLuup v7 loaded. This is in effort to reduce questions within the group regarding how to upgrade or the inability to access the AltUI updates as well as the AppStore (to name a few).

Tonight I’ll be fully updating the Raspbian Jessie image for the Raspberry Pi (models 1,2 and 3). This will contain the master versions of both openLuup and AltUI. IF anyone has an immediate need for alternate distros (Ubuntu, Odrobian images etc.), please send me a PM or reply to this thread and I’ll see what I can do to assist.

Much appreciated,
CN
