I am using my V2 as an wifi accesspoint onto my lan (linux server on lan does DHCP). Will I not be able to do this with V3?[/quote]
WI-Fi isn’t a problem. You can make Vera3 an access point.
The issue that I’m referring to happens if you are connecting two or more Ethernet cables to Vera, and if you want both Ethernet interfaces to be on the same subnet. This primarily happens when you are trying to use the Vera as a wired switch. (Some untruths in this description to avoid talking about edge cases.)
OK, I’ve been using my Vera 2 (UI4) for about 7 months and it is working well. I am considering buying into the ‘upgrade’ offer just posted but have some concerns. Hoping some others have can shed some experience with me to help decide if upgrading is a wise decision.
My system hardware consists of numerous outlets and switches which should not be a problem. There is 1 Kwikset door lock, 2 motion sensors, 2 Trane thermostats, a DSC 1832 alarm panel, and a Leviton 4 button zone controller.
On the software side I am using the following plug-ins or add-ons: Smart Phone plug in, T-Stat Min/Max plug in and DCS Plug in as well as Google Weather, Ping Sensor, Virtual Switches, Home Care, Variables Container, Luup System Info, Holiday Calendar and Vera Alert.
So, its a fairly complex set up that I would hate to have to recreate. I did try the UI5 upgrade early on with miserable results, and ended up going back to UI4. Have not tried the UI5 upgrade since then, even though some users are having good results.
My concerns are: In order to migrate to a Vera 3 I will need to upgrade to UI5 first to create a backup that can be uploaded to the Vera 3. If my upgrade goes afoul again there will be considerable pains while resotring to UI4 plus the inability to use a new Vera 3. If the upgrade goes OK, what can I expect NOT to work on the Vera 3? Surely it is unrealistic to believe that everything will work without some tweaking, and I fear that some things may not work at all.
Any feedback from users who have traveled down this path would be greatly appreciated.
As did I since I have a existing infrastructure already with a b/g and an n router and really do not need another WiFi router. But I’d definately would like to be able to upgrade to a VeraLite even though my vera2 has been very stable.
I replied to the email but haven’t heard back yet. Is Micasaverde considering a deal for us Vera 2 users to upgrade to a VeraLite instead? I really to not need the WiFi/router functionality on a Vera3 (Not using it on my vrea2 either) but would like to upgrade to a VeraLite.
@kartcon: I suggest you back-up your configuration and try again to upgrade to the latest UI5 version available and see if you encounter the same issues as before, just to be sure. @BOFH: At the moment the upgrade offer is only available to the Vera 3, but unfortunately I am not sure if there will be an upgrade to Vera lite as well.
I am not sure if the offer is available for the AU version of the Vera units but I suggest you send us an email to sales@micasaverde.com with that question just to be sure.
I have already emailed the same question to the address you mentioned
This was the response:
Hi …, you buy your Vera3 directly from ushere in our shop. Then, you return your unit to either our Los Angeles office or Romanian office. When we receive your old Vera, we will refund you (either the credit card you used to purchase the Vera3 or your paypal account) $150.

It is just not a viable option for an Australian customer. They are better ignoring this and just buying a Vera light AU or Vera 3 AU model when they require an upgrade.
Note for those Northerners following along: we call this kind of situation “Paying the Australia Tax”.
(ObVera: I wonder who builds the Veras that contain Australian-frequency Z-Wave chips. Are they made as a special batch in China and shipped straight to the Australia/NZ distributors? Or does someone onshore actually unsolder the US/EU frequency chips and stick an Australian one on? Either way, it makes sense why MCV doesn’t have any to offer us.)
I was informed by MCV they supply them but only to the Australian distributor (SmartHome AU). Don’t know the distribution chain but if I remember i will ask Wayne next time I speak to him.
I wonder what’s preventing Oz from following the European RF spectrum allocation, since it’s nearly there with the larger contributors like Cell freqs. Over the years, custom spectrum requirements have seriously stuffed Australia a number of times, which adds to the Oz-tax on items with radios… Z-Wave being one of a large family of examples.
I found is this document, but it’s not detailed enough to see what was in collision with either the US or European frequencies.
Roll on WiFi-based home automation
In the meantime, your idea of swapping out the boards sounds interesting. Hopefully the Z-Wave daughter-board is pin-compat between the V2 and V3 Hardware.
By the way the fourth generation also brings interesting new features like;
The ability to also use the Z-Wave® protocol over IP (Internet Protocol) networks allows Z-wave® enabled products to connect seamlessly using the wireless mesh network, the home network, and the Internet.
Just in case anyone is interested to know, these things ship super fast. I placed my order at about 10:30AM Pacific time on Tuesday and had my order in hand today with the USPS shipping option. Color me totally impressed.
The upgrade goes just as fast as the delivery. Assuming UI5 is already on your Vera2, it takes well less than 30 minutes from opening the box to completing the migration (including moving the logs to a USB drive). Don’t forget to change the zwave dongle port in settings is set to /dev/ttyS0 after you do the restore.
The performance improvement is noticable versus vera2. Reboots are faster. UI is much snappier. Perceived scene execution seems to be improved as well but I’ll need to play with in a while to really see.
So far I am seeing the $150 upgrade to be worth the price of admission.
