Can anyone explain the difference between Leviton in-wall scene controllers (like VRCS4-MRZ) and zone controllers (VRCZ4-MRZ)? I have a couple of the scene controllers working in 979. I also have a couple of zone controllers that I ordered by mistake, and I was planning to return them and get more scene controllers, but now I can’t tell what the functional differences would be in a Vera network. Does anyone have experience with these?
Technically the only difference is the style of button. The Scene is a toggle on/off and the Zone is a rocker on/off.
I find that with Zone controller I get higher flexibility - I can independently control 4 zones/devices at the same time.
You can do that with a scene controller as well, you just only assign one device per button.
ASIHOME - I have successfully installed two Leviton 4-button scene controllers, and I really like them. I also ordered and used the Leviton pre-printed buttons - the installation just looks very professional that way. However, I have a couple of buttons on the 2nd controller that I want to assign to specific zones, rather than scenes, and I also need to install a third controller in my bedroom, and for that one, I’ll want to only control zones (i.e. specific lights/rooms), So I’d like to order the preprinted Zone buttons, but I’d like one of the buttons to be an “All Off”, and that pre-printed button isn’t available in the “zone” package of buttons, only in the “Scene” package. So here is my question…
- Given that the Leviton Scene and Zone controllers are technically identical, except for the look of their buttons, can I mix/match zone & scene type buttons in a single controller? For that second existing scene controller, I’d like to be able to use a couple of the pre-printed zone buttons, and as mentioned above, for my new third controller, I’d like to use a single “All Off” scene button, but the others as zone buttons (i.e. labels). When I look at their pictures online, they both seem to have the same tab/stub that gets inserted into the hole on the controller, even though the shape of the button and location of the led are different. Or do you think this would just look klugy? My dilemma is that I want the pre-printed buttons, but I need some of the zone labels as opposed to the scene labels, and they only seem to be available on zone-type buttons.
Thanks in advance for any information.

You cannot mix buttons. The LEDs are in different places and there are plastics that would be in the way.
I don’t generally like to dredge up old topics, but this one is exactly my question.

It was my understanding that the zone controller buttons send ON and OFF commands, vs just the scene ON command of scene controllers. If they work pretty much the same, how do you know when a scene button’s LED goes off?

You can make a Zone Controller do scenes and a Scene Controller do zones, depending on how you configure them (Scenes vs Area On/Off). The LEDs operate as follows (when used with Vizia RF+ devices):
For a Zone, when ANY of the lights in the Zone are turned on, the LED would come on and when ALL the lights in the Zone are turned off, the LED would go out.
For a Scene, when the Scene button is pressed, the LED would come on and if ANY of the lights were turned off OR changed to a different level, the LED would go out.
When being used with non-Vizia RF+ devices, I believe Vera manages it but I don’t know how.
Adding that when using the controllers with Vera, you essentially get scene behavior.
I recommend the zone controllers. Make sure they are the -M0 or -MR kind, not -LX.
