I saw a thread this morning relating to z-wave switch types (std rockers vs. the Vizia style) and it prompted a question that’s been bugging me a while.
Before switching to z-wave, I was a big consumer of Lutron Maestro dimmers, and I’ve always like the double-tap for immediate full brightness. Switching to the Vizia+ method of holding down the button to get immediate full brightness took some getting used to. However, what is kind of annoying is the length of time you have to hold the button down for it to kick into full bright - it just seems about one second too long, whcih sounds trivial, but makes a big difference when you’re accustomed to being able to quickly double-tap to get full brightness on the Lutrons. So my question…
Several features of these dimmers are programmable, like ramp rate, behaviour of the status LEDs, etc, and I’ve played with a couple of them. But I can’t find a setting to control that time-span to hold down the button to achieve full brightness. Does anyone know if there is such a setting, or am I stuck with the behavior as is? Does adjusting the ramp rate affect that hold-down period (meaning if I speed up the ramp rate will I need to hold the button down for less time to get immediate full brightness)?
Ah! I feel your pain! I had the same exact experience. I was so used to quickly double-tap the switch for full brightness while passing by. Now I have to stop at the switch for couple seconds to get it to full brightness…
Unfortunately, from what I heard, there is a patent war between Lutron and Leviton and Leviton cannot implement these trivial and useful features in their dimmers. The patent law in this country sucks big time! “Double-tap for full brightness” is a patented feature, my a$$! >:( Anybody knows if “breathing to be alive” patented yet? BTW, apparently the change of appearance of the dimmer pad and LEDs between old Vizia-RF and new Vizia-RF+ is also due to the patent issues… I totally dislike the new horizontal dimmer pad on Vizia-RF+
I doubt that. You can control ramp rates and LED behavior, but you can’t control how long you need to hold the button to get it switched to the full brightness. We can certainly hope it is programmable and will be supported by Vera some day, but highly doubtful…
