Foscam FI8910W

After looking over the forums here and the Vera hardware compatibility wiki page, it seems like the Foscam cameras have gotten many positive reviews. On the MicaseVerde wiki page, it lists the Foscam FI8908/FI8908W cameras as being compatible with Vera. However, Foscam now has a new camera, the model FI8910W that is its new flagship camera.

Does anyone know about the compatibility of Foscam’s newest camera with Vera, specifically a Vera Lite? Would IP cameras be able to be viewed via the “iVera” iPhone app that I currently use to control my z-wave devices from? Thanks!

I Have it. It woks correctly and you can also PTZ.

The only think that I m not able to setup is the streaming video. You can see the image only with snapshot for the moment.

Anyone can help us?

Thanks
Matteo

Teonebello:

Thanks for the reply. When you say you can’t get the streaming video to work, are you referring to when you try to view it on a web-browser or on a mobile phone app?

I use my iPhone to control my other z-wave devices via the iVera app. It’s worked flawlessly with my z-wave t-stat and a fan control switch so far. I see it does have a section for cameras, so of course I would like to purchase a vera compatible camera that I could view a live feed from using my iPhone. The Foscam camera looks great, but obviously if there’s a problem getting streaming video from the camera feed then that defeats the purpose of the camera for me.

My understanding and this has been provided by MCV, the current UI5 support for remote streaming of cameras outside of the network is not fully supported yet. I can tell you that I can not get remote camera streaming to work. This is a bummer as I would have liked to get camera streaming working in my android application. Others have been able to get it to work with UI5, but from what I understand, they upgraded from UI4 to UI5 and were able to make it work.

Thanks Garett,

That’s too bad… I was following another thread I think you had replied in regarding the new Foscam cameras where a PTZ Foscam file was attached. Even with that file, there’s no ability yet to stream video if you have a Vera with UI5? Hopefully it’s something the developers at Vera will work into another firmware update.

My point was not the streaming from remote, but the streaming URL needed to see the stream also in the home network and used to record video.

Do you any idea about the streamingurl for the foscam 8910?

Thanks

Is the following assumptions correct?

  1. Vista Cam is support by MiCasa so live video streaming is possible.

  2. Non supported manufactures like Foscom do have the ability to view live video streaming.

I just got a FI8910W as well, and also have the earlier model FI8918W and am having the same setup difficulties.

If I try to access it locally, 192.168.1.xx/video.cgi works fine. However if I try to access it via dyndns, I get the same problem you’re talking about. Instead of bringing up video, it asks me to save the cgi file. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

Oops, nevermind. Figured out my issue, bad router setting. The video streaming URL works on the FI8910W just the same as on the FI8918W.

Flatgreg,

Thanks for the update. I’m happy to hear that you were able to get the streaming option to work with the Foscam FI8910W. That works through Vera, right? (you’re able to view the streaming video on the Vera dashboard and not just through the camera IP address)? Was it difficult to set-up under Vera (did you have to follow any special set-up instructions or install any plugin support)? Also, do all the Foscam camera functions work for you, like pan/motion detection/night vision)?

If you use any Z-wave control apps on a smart phone, were you able to get the camera functionality in the app?

Sorry for all the questions… I just want to do my research before I order a camera for use on my z-wave network. Thanks!

Does anyone know if the Foscam FI8910W will ever support zoom functions? The zoom in and zoom out functions are built into the Vera UI and in my smartphone app, but from what I’ve seen surprising the Foscam doesn’t actually support a zoom function. Would a firmware update from Foscam change this or will this camera never be able to zoom in on an object?

Looking at the camera specs, the camera does not support zooming. So the zoom functions on vera will not work.

At best it could support a digital zoom (essentially cropping and enlarging a portion of the picture with mostly horrible resolution). This is how the app I use on my iPhone (Foscam Pro) does it. The resulting picture is so grainy it not really of any use.

True zoom support would require new hardware. Foscam’s recently annouced FI8919WZ has a 3x optical zoom.

The Foscam FI8910W has a built-in motion sensor, which in Vera, shows up as a sensor. I get a “no implementation” error when I click on “bypass” (it’s already on ‘arm’). I’m assuming that the Foscam plugin that made the pan/tilt functions of the camera possible doesn’t support the motion sensing feature. Any chance this might be implemented in the future?? I would be great to use the camera as a sensor as well for scenes.

It works (I am running three FI8910Ws). Check out the links and instructions in the first post of this topic:

You can install the file in the first post or upgrade to the most recent Vera firmware (1.5.408) which should have the correct file.

Hi Trosky40,

Thanks for helping me out recently with my Foscam questions. I didn’t realize there was a newer firmware update, so I upgraded like you suggested. I also downloaded the D_DigitalSecurityCamera2.json file and then uploaded it and restarted the Luup engine.

Now I no longer get the “no implementation” error when I click “arm” or “bypass” on the sensor on my Vera dashboard, but no motion is still reported as being detected. I set a text alert when motion should be sensed but I still don’t get an alert. On my iVera app the “tripped” alert is also not tripped when I wave my hand in front of the camera. Any ideas? I should still have “I_FoscamPTZ.xml” in my imp_file field in the advanced tab of the camera right? Do I have to change something in the advanced tab of the motion sensor device? Any advice would be appreciated… since you got all three of yours to work I know I’m still doing something wrong

In the advanced tab on the camera change the setting in the “ConfiguredMD” variable to 1 and then hit save. This should cause the motion sensor to reset/reload (once it is complete the ConfiguredMD will change back to 2).

Once I did this with the new firmware everything started working for me.

Trosky40,

Thanks for the advice. I tried changing the value to 1 and like you said, it did reload back to a value of 2 but I still have no motion detection. The mtion sensor shows up as being controlled by the camera so that all looks right. I don’t know what else I can try.

On another note, I don’t know which step I tried that caused this but in the process of attempting to get the motion sensor to work the camera now no longer works on my iPhone iVera app (though it does work in the Vera web application). In my iVera app the camera now shows up under an “unsupported” heading and when I try opening it I get an error that says “no lua status found for this device”. I tried removing the camera and the dos am plugin and putting them back in but I still get the same error in the app. Could the latest firmware update have done this or maybe the luup foscam files I uploaded to try to get the motion working from that thread you pointed me to? I’d rather have the camera work again in the app at this point than anything. Any advice? Thanks again for the help.

There is a problem with the Foscam Motion Sensors not working if you have applied the ‘Secure This Vera’ option under Setup>Unit Settings. Not sure if this applies to your issue.

Ok, so I figured out that changing my “device_file” field of the camera to “D_DigitalSecurityCamera2.xml” causes the camera to not work in my iVera iPhone app. It only shows up when I point the device_file field to D_DigitalSecurityCamera1.xml.

So far, to try to get the motion sensor working, I’ve upgraded Vera to the most current firmware 1.5.408. I’ve downloaded all luup scripts from the foscam thread (I have a duplicate D_DigitalSecurityCamera2.json file, I don’t know if that’s affecting anything). I’ve ensured my Vera was set to “no” under ‘Secure This Vera’. Can anyone that has a working Foscam camera motion sensor post a pic of your “advanced” settings of the camera? Anything else anyone can think of that I should be doing? ???

The iOS app I use (Automator.app) also has a problem with the new Foscam plugin. According to the developer it is because of the introduction of a new device type (DigitalCamera:2). Not sure if this is true for iVera as well.

I have attached screen shots of the Advanced tab of one of my cameras.
