Doorbot: What do you guys think and can it be "hacked" for more functionality?

The issues are not resolved; terrible device :frowning:

This is kinda of sad that they could not have a decent product out of the gate, given that none of the things it does are new technology.

Push notify with video and audio just packed in a doorbell… great idea… but nothing that had to be invented… just assemble in a package.

Seems pretty straight forward, I agree - but just doesn’t work for them.

Current problems :

  • It can take up to 30 seconds from someone presses the button until you get notified on your smartphone …
  • It take another 10 seconds from you accept the “call” until established. By then the visitor is gone away.
  • Video quality is erratic; Sometimes ok - but mostly it’s so distorted that you cannot see anything.
  • Audio - 50% of the time you cannot hear anything.

Most of the excuses from the company are related to bandwidth. I am however on a 100/100 mbps line - the doorbot is placed around 2 meters from my wifi router.

Crap.

I have to agree with the above posts that the Doorbot product is really bad.
I had a lot of high hopes for this product as well as plans for another mounting product for it that are all now on hold as I can not recommend this product at all.
If something changes, I will post.
Until then I would not waste my money on this product.

I know at least one of you returned it. Everyone else just have it stored in the corner, hoping some update in firmware will change its functionality? The thing that confounds me is the wireless B. If I had known that, no way I would have bought it, but who would think that they would use a decade old wireless technology. That has to be a good part of the problems. The other is the routing all video and audio through their servers. There should be a local stream option for devices on the same network.

Spot on! I think this is the main reason for their problems.

I agree completely. One more problem, is if they go out out of business, all of the Doorbots out there are doorstops.
I would really like to see someone hack these and make them open.

Since my last post I have been in contact with Doorbot’s support team several times. They have responded timely and have sent me a replacement unit with an external antenna which extends into a hole which I drilled in the brick.

Initially the difference was minimal, however with a new firmware push things have gotten much better. Yesterday I was in my studio which is behind the house about 60’ and also brick faced when I got a notification from the Doorbot… everything worked as it should with the exception that the video quality was not as good as they advertise on their website, but I could clearly make out the face of the Mail man.

All in all it’s a great idea and they DO seem like they want me to be happy with the product. The only other issue that I have is that on several occasions some folks don’t push the button once they see the camera.
