Doorbot: What do you guys think and can it be "hacked" for more functionality?

What’s everyone’s thoughts? I was looking for a front door IP camera solution that can record video and/or take stills when it senses motion at the front door; Vera integration would a plus but not a must. Anyway, I ran into this while searching:

https://secure.christiestreet.com/products/doorbot

I like the form factor and sleekness. I don’t like that it has to take 4 AA batteries, but then again, my Kwikset locks require batteries too. From my understanding, the person at the door has to ring the doorbell of the unit, which in turns pushes a live video/notification. You can can then “answer” the door with your iPhone/iPad and converse with the guest.

I’m wondering if the functionality can be increased since it’s an IP camera at its core. I would perhaps have a Zwave motion sensor set up at the door that would automatically trigger video recording or at least take still shots if there’s someone just snooping around my front door and NOT ringing the doorbell during the day when we’re not home or at night. The Zwave motion sensor would also push a notification to my phone so I can view the motion live via the automator.app if I choose to do so. I already have a Synology NAS that can be used to store these videos/images.

This solution for me would seem promising since I wouldn’t have to drill holes and run PPoe or DC cabling for a dedicated IP camera. Or is there another product or solution you guys recommend I look into?

wow, looks cool. subscribing.

Could work with Vera depending on the protocols they use.

I just got an email reply back from the company in regards to my questions. They say that camera functionality without the ringer will not be possible with v1.0. I asked if a later firmware update would allow this functionality and they said no. It would more than likely require v2.0, in other words new hardware. Interesting product nonetheless…

Just got another update on the product, the company says they will release an API at some point after the units begin shipping in July. Does this theoretically mean a Vera “plugin” can be written to interface with this camera?

I asked them that very question to see how one might interact with the API. We’ll see what they say.

Brilliant idea, lets hope they will sell it in the UK. Would be even better with Vera integration…

interesting idea. but, running on 4 AA batteries with WiFi connection is going to be a challenge! I’m guessing the device would be off/sleeping by default until someone presses the ringer button. I doubt you’ll be able to use it as an IP cam with just AA batteries!

There is some talk from the designers on their website’s Q&A section about using the existing doorbell wiring to power/charge the Doorbot…which would mean 16-24v AC power in typical homes I think.

I love the concept but hope the API will permit Vera integration so it can also work with a zwave deadbolt. Sounds like the designer is interested in this capability.

So here’s the latest on the Doorbot features. I should be expecting delivery late Aug / early September. Unfortunately no turning on the camera for viewing or recording without ringing the doorbell.

Mine has been on order since early summer too. Looking forward to being an early adopter. I hope a plug in is possible!

We will be replacing the Doorbots enclosure with a custom made faceplate and making the Doorbot a flushmount unit.
More details when we get our hands on one.

@jamr: that would be sweet. Can’t wait to see your creation!

Has anyone received this yet?

Still waiting on mine…

Just had an email from the developers re shipping
" I am happy to say that we now have the final product coming off the factory line and will have the first units delivered to us by the end of September. We will therefore begin shipping DoorBot units by October 1st. "
Looking forward to this arriving

David

Same here. Can’t wait to try the product.

please let us know how it goes. I hope they provide a proper API to integrate with Vera …

Have you guys seen the iDoorCam? Same idea as doorbot but much smaller.

http://www.idoorcam.com/

Also, it allows you to access the camera without the doorbell being rung (which I don’t think doorbot lets you do).

Wow! Looks like the iDoorcam will have motion detection capabilities as well according to the FAQ. The feature set seems better than the Doorbot. I’m feeling some buyer’s remorse. :frowning: Nonetheless, can’t wait to see real life comparisons between both products.
