Zwave Plus Replacement

Posted on Vera controls Facebook page:

Now the Vera Edge is out and supports the new “Zwave Plus” protocol. The ZWave interface is as I recalled fully contained on a daughter-board in the Vera 3 so why not produce a replacement ZWave Plus board for the Vera 3?

i’m perfectly happy with my two fairly new Vera 3 units (one just a year old the other under 6 months) so I for one would welcome such a replacement board to would allow those of us with solid Vera 3 hardware to extend the life at hopefully a reasonable cost.

I’m guessing;

Even if there are a perfectly compatible z-wave board, there would be no incitement for MCV to support it, and it would most likely cost more to get this solution through regulatory testing than they would earn from some upgraders.

If you are happy with it stay with it, maybe there’s a upgrade offer to a edge (or its followers) of some sort later on.

…and, they shot that idea right down.

A shame; the idea to upgrade Vera3s seems reasonable. Does anyone see ANY reason to upgrade a Vera3 to a Vera Edge? It appears the early adopters have their hands full…

I believe most of You guys wanting Z-Wave+ on the controller won’t benefit from that anyway due to that your other Z-Wave devices won’t speak Z-Wave+ anyway.

In my best whiny “think of the CHILDREN!” voice … but what about SECURITY?

I have one… yes, one… Zwave plus device (Aeon’s new siren) which is for the most part a brick on Vera3 UI7.

Umm… what about when I buy new devices that are Z-wave Plus (especially battery operated ones)? That was the whole point of upgrading the controller.

I heard back from the Vera folks … as I suspected

"AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. But don't worry we will provide an a upgrade path ..."

So you are suggesting that ZWave Plus will NOT be backward compatible? Buy Thirty or 40 new ZWave devices to get to use one ZWave+ device? That’s going to produce even more unhappy campers than having to buy a new Vera to get ZWave+ ::slight_smile:

Zwave plus IS backwards compatible, what I believe won’t work is a zwave plus device with a z wave controller as was posted above. I have a vera edge with zwave plus and NO zwave plus devices and they all work as expected.

That’s what I would expect … although given Vera track record so far

Just wait for Aeon’s Z-Stick 3(?) “Now New and Improved with Z-Wave Plus”. I would expect it to work fine in a UI7 Vera. For that matter, it should work in a UI5 Vera as well, but UI5 may lack "awareness of certain newer commands.

Z-Wave Pus devices are compatible with older Z-Wave controllers. They added functionality, they didn’t take any away.

Exactly.
