I am looking for a Z-wave version of the X10 Universl Module or does anyone know of an alternative solution?
So other folks know, you’re talking about something like this?: http://www.x10.com/pum01-universal-module.html
If so, I’m not sure of a one for one replacement device, but there are options for achieving similar goals. If you’re looking for a specific application, let us know. Somebody’s probably already done it and can help you out.
We are are equiping a hospital room with controls that will allow individuals with severe movement problems the ability to control their environment. We have already done a lot of work with other components. Two challenges that we are still facing is the nursing call light and television. This application is specifically related to the call light.
Please post which hospital this is, so that I can make sure that I never go there.
I do not regard X-10 or Z-Wave to be acceptable solutions for a hospital environment. In fact many Z-Wave switches clearly state in the manual that the switch is NOT to be used to control hospital/medical equipment.
Just to clarify, we are not replacing traditional call light technology. We are desigining solutions for people who currently have NO access to commercially available call light devices (brainstem impairment, high level SCI, etc.). We have successfully integrated the X10 universal modules to allow these patients the ability to access their nurse call systems through their speech generating devices for the past decade and this approach has been commonly used and executed within the rehabilitation field. We are simply asking if there is a zwave module that is similar to the X10 universal remote. If not, we will likely continue using the X10 module to help these patients who would otherwise have no ability to use a nurse call system.
Also, please see the definition for medical device. We are using this for environmental control. There are no medical devices that are being controlled.
A medical device is an instrument, apparatus, implant, in vitro reagent, or similar or related article that is used to diagnose, prevent, or treat disease or other conditions, and does not achieve its purposes through chemical action within or on the body (which would make it a drug).
Please keep responses to useful information!
Just looking for contact closure? There are z-wave modules for dry contact closure…
Yes. A low voltage version. Do you have a specific one in mind?

Regardless of your previous track record, X-10 and Z-Wave devices remain, in my opinion, completely unsuitable for such an application and I do not ever want myself or my family to have our lives depend on any of it.
Please keep responses to useful information!
I’ll keep doing as I please, thanks. . But, you’re free to keep making demands, if you wish.
I’m not really interested in your opinion. I am interested in a solution. If you don’t have one, then I don’t care to waste my time reading your underinformed posts. Thank you.
Either you are not actually reading my posts or you are just a stubborn idiot. Nothing in our rooms would be used for anything where you our your family’s life would depend on it. In addition, we don’t take away the functionality of the currently existing call light, so essentially it would function the same whether you had the z-wave or not. Also, we are not an acute care hospital.
@tbuster and @Z-Waver : Let’s keep this topic decent, there is no need for insults and off topics. I think we can have a civilized discussion here, so please keep it like this.
All the bests,

Thank you!
In theory I think a ‘nurse call’ button would work like a garage door, so a Evolve LFM-20 Z-Wave Relay Fixture Module or a Remotec Zwave Dry Contact Fixture Module ZFM-80. I think Linear makes one too…
Hey tbuster,
Check out the FortrezZ MIMOlite Z-Wave Interface. I think this is what you are looking for.
Good luck!
