Z-wave electrical outlet

I hope this will be the best forum for this question. This is an electrical connection question.

I recently bought a GE Z-wave Duplex Receptacle (Lowe’s Iris 45636) to replace a ceiling outlet in my garage (to control a garage door opener, but that’s beyond the scope of this question).

The old receptacle had 5 wires (2 blacks, 2 whites, 1 ground) attached to it wherein my Z-wave receptacle only has 3 (black, white, ground). I’m guessing the receptacle I’m replacing still has other receptacles/switches connected to it downstream and in series.

Question: Can I simply connect the 2 existing black wires to the new receptacle’s black wire, connect the 2 existing whites to the new white wire, then ground to ground?

Thanks!

Yes that is exactly what you should do. As you surmised, one cable is the supply and the other is the feed to other sockets.

Thanks, Rex!
