Wine Cellar monitoring

Rather than hijack another post, I thought I could just start a new one. In the other post, someone wanted to monitor temperature and humidity and wasn’t happy with their multi sensor unit. Someone suggested a standalone thermostat with a 24volt power supply.

This seems like a great idea for my purposes. I need a very accurate temperature and the humidity would be a big bonus. So, my question is this: Can I just buy the least expensive z-wave thermostat that says it will monitor temp and humidity? Will I have to wire anything up or can I just hook it up to the power supply and set it on a shelf and include it into my vera lite?

Would anyone have a suggestion for a simple brand or unit to accomplish this? My goal is to be notified if the termperature were to rise or fall outside of my parameters. Keeping a log of the temperature and humidity would be great as well.

Ultimately I may need to add some motion and or camera to identify the accesses to the room. In case it matters, the room is 10ft by 8 feet. Cooled by a wine cooler unit specific for that room. The cooler seems to maintain a good range but I could miss it failing or somehow the outside temperature dropping the room temp too much.

Thanks in advance. I am just starting having just accomplished a HA solution for my hot water circulator.

I’m sure that this would work the way you describe, but unfortunately, the number of Z-Wave enabled thermostats with humidity are pretty limited.

There are some non-Z-Wave options too. I wound up going with a Nest 2 unit–which isn’t Z-Wave–however, the Nest plugin has been working flawlessly for me (I also wanted to control a humidifier, not just measure relative humidity).

EDIT: In addition to Data Mine that watou mentioned, I have also had great luck integrating Vera data into ThingSpeak.

I would search for comments and reviews from users about temperature and humidity accuracy before spending. I recently saw (I forget where – sorry) a Z-Wave thermostat on sale for $60, and was shocked at how low the price was. But not knowing if it was of any quality or if it tracked humidity…

I’ve got a Nest downstairs and an ecobee upstairs, and they both appear to give accurate temp and humidity readings. If the wine cellar has a good wi-fi signal but not a good Z-Wave signal, they would be possible alternatives, but not likely as inexpensive as some Z-Wave thermostats.

I am very fond of the dataMine plugin for logging. It’s working great for me to log and chart all kinds of variables. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

P.S. DaveL17 – glad to hear the Nest plugin is working for you!

It has!
