I know it defeats some of your intended features, but I’d like Vera to operate as a wireless client instead of a WiFi router. That is, I’d like to be able to have it join my existing Wifi network instead of offering one of its own. I already run two separate wifi networks in my home/office, I don’t need a third. Additionally, this would allow more flexibility in where I put Vera; it wouldn’t have to be near a hardwired network location.
Same here. Vera will be my 3rd router. Client mode would be priceless.
Good suggestion. I believe it’s doable because once you make a change to the network settings on the net & wi-fi tab, then all Vera’s auto-configuration is turned off. So you can go into the OpenWRT menu (advanced configuration) and there’s a zillion networking things you can tweak in there. But, OpenWRT is pretty geek oriented. So, what we should do is either: 1) add a user friendly way of doing this on Vera’s net & wi-fi tab. Or 2) create a wiki that explains step-by-step how to do it in the OpenWRT menu’s without getting lost.
I added this mantis/bug report entry: http://bugs.micasaverde.com/view.php?id=164
We’ll cross-post to this forum thread to keep you updated and include instructions for doing it within openwrt.
Thanks. I did try to figure out how to do it with OpenWRT but failed. If it’s possible, that’s a solution that’s OK with me, as long as someone can document it.
Another request for client mode as I also have multiple routers. Vera ordered, and excited about the prospects.
I would be very interested in a client mode because I’m running a vacation rental business and allow people to connect into the router for internet but would like to hide away the Vera where they can’t get to it. I have no way of hard wiring it. Has anyone come up with instructions how to do this? Are they working on a new firmware to make it happen in the normal Vera menu?
I would also be interested in AP client mode. I could then put Vera in a less conspicuous place than it is now just to get it next to power and Ethernet.
I found out how to do it but I’ve had it fail on me a couple times now and it won’t load the data when I try to access it from my house not on the local Vera network. When I access it on the local network it seems to start working again for a day or so. It could be the router I’m using because I have it setup as a repeater. Anyway here is how to do it. The only problem I ran into is it would only allow me to use WEP and when I tried to click the link to update it to be able to use WPA 2 it was a dead link.
Step0. Unplug any cables from the WAN Port
Step1. Open Vera Web Admin page: http://local.findvera.com
Step2. Go to Advanced → Net&wi-fi
Step3. Set:
- Firewall to No Firewall (bridge)
- Dhcp Server: off
Step4. Go to Advanced → Net&wi-fi → Advanced Configurations
If you haven’t setup any users, login with root ( by default there is no password) I found it wouldn’t work with root and no password so I set up a user and password before continuing.
Step5. Go to Network → Wireless
Step6. Wireless Adapter wl0 Configuration
Set Radio to On and Channel to Auto
Step7. Wireless Virtual Adaptor Configuration for Wireless Card wl0
Set Mode to Client
Set ESSID, Encryption Type, according to your existing wireless network
Step8. Press Save & Apply Changes
Step9. Save changes on Net&Wi-Fi page.
Good luck, I hope it works for you. Let me know if you have problems with it not loading data after a while also.
I had found this info in a wiki but changed it up a little because they had you saving the info in step 3 and if you did that you could no longer access Vera and would have to do a hard reset to get back in and start over.
After much frustration with the Vera disconnecting from the router which is only about 10 feet away I still have not figured anything out. My laptop stays connected to the router from over 120 feet away. Sometimes it will reconnect without resetting it but it can be down for a day or more or at least every time I try to access it locally or remotely. Has anyone else tried using client mode yet? Maybe I’m missing a setting somewhere that will stop it from dropping out all the time.
The original question isn’t really Vera-specific, I think you need to try OpenWRT/Kamikaze forums.
And let us know!
I realize it use is set under OpenWRT/Kamikaze but it certainly is Vera-specific since you can access it from Vera’s own UI. It’s not some backdoor thing. Anyway I did figure out how to get it to stop dropping out. I set a static ip on my router and set Vera to static ip instead of dhcp and it’s been working for days now.
Hmmm, maybe I should have done a bit more research…
I expected to be able to run Vera as a Wifi client, or at the very least a client device on ethernet.
Does wifi client mode not work reliably?
Once I set the the router with a static ip for Vera with it’s mac address and set Vera with that static ip instead of dhcp I have have it working non stop for 11 days now. Make sure that static ip is outside the range of your dhcp. ie I have Vera’s ip 192.169.1.100 start your dhcp at 192.168.1.101 It may work fine for someone else with dhcp on another set up but I actually like knowing what ip Vera is on so I can access it it localy by just typing in that ip address.
reiserx, can you confirm that you are talking about setting it up as a WIFI client?
Also what Encryption are you using? I cannot get the WPA/WPA2 to take.
I looks like a script runs that tries to download via FTP the module that it needs, but doesn’t find it.
Thus far, I’ve not tired the WIFI client, but the LAN client appears to work…
In NETWORK → Advanced Configuration in the OPENWRT UI, I can’t get changes there to stick.
I’m not familiar with OpenWRT. Not that familiar with Linux either, but have been using DDWRT on my home access points.
However, setting a static IP address for INTERNET (WAN),
disabling Vera DHCP server, and disabling Vera Wifi,
Vera does work on the network just fine and external access through FindVera also works.
Yes, I’m talking about Wifi client I was using WEP because like you it wouldn’t let me download the correct files but after seeing the openwrt bug thread you just posted I guess you figured out the problem with the wrong link. It’s not the only bad like I’ve found in there either.
I haven’t had any issues saving the changes I’ve made in openwrt.
I’m very familiar with DD-Wrt that’s what my router is running that hosts Vera. It’s running in repeater mode.
No WPA? If it’s the case it worth a bug to be opened. I was thinking to move Vera to the room with AV system once LUA delivered to use it for IR too, but without WPA it’s impossible. If you run WEP you could just put a banner on your door “wi-fi hotspot is here!” This is real, people do it for fun and not just fun - just look at the discussion under this thing http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.20160
I know the risks of using wep because I’ve cracked it myself. I was just waiting for them to fix the link so it worked. I’ll try the link that ubiquityman posted in the other thread when I’m out there again. There are so many open internet sources in the complex that most people probably arn’t going to try.
I tried using WPA 2 and even though it says you need to install the NAS package for it to work when you click on it, it’s already pre-installed and it works fine.
I’m still struggling with this. It doesn’t seem to remember the settings after I hit save. It never seems to connect to my wireless AP
Anyone have this still working with the latest firmware?
If your hitting save in the advanced configuration / open wrt you have to also hit apply after that for the settings to take.
I just upgraded to the Luup firmware and it doesn’t work anymore. It seems to get internet but won’t log in through findvera. I can’t even log in locally so I’m in the process now of probably having to revert back to 616. I’m going to give it one more shot after resetting and starting over but I can’t even get on to submit a ticket once it’s set up.
