What do I need?

I am looking for a home automated system. I really only want a programmable thermostat and the door locks. I want to be able to control everything from my iPhone when I’m not around.
With that being said, it looks like I need :
1 mi casa verde Vera lite controller
1 programmable thermostat. Would this work?

And 1 door lock. Would this work?

Yes, those will work. The only thing missing form your ist is an iPhone app. There are several available.

Most definitely.

you may face a range problem if the 3 devices will be installed relatively far from each other, especially the lock and Vera. If that’s the case you may need intermediary z-wave node(s) in between to allow mesh routing and improve range.

That shouldn’t be a problem. The Vera will be installed in the living room, only about 10 feet from the front door. The thermostat is about 15 feet from the living room so they’re all pretty close.
