Water consumption meter

I have been looking for a water consumption meter with Vera integration or Wifi only, but so far nothing good. Secure SWM 301 seems to be doing the job, but I have not seen anybody reporting on it. I need something that could read real time consumption. Also I have never seen how it will look on Vera graphics. Something like this http://aquamonitor.com.au/ , but I cannot use it to monitor the consumption over the internet or Android app.

Any help will be appreciated.

I’ve been waiting for one of these to hit the market, since most require you to put the metering component inline in the pipe, and then they tend not to have enough range in their measurement (either they handle a low flow, or a high flow rate, but not both)

The hardware you’ve indicated looks fairly reasonable, although they don’t appear to have any pricing/availability on the WiFi version.

At CES, Lowes announced they’ll be releasing a device to do this, to be part of it’s Iris range. From the pictures, it looks like it’s from Soneter, but their site is lacking any information on the device. Probably won’t help you though, esp if you’re in Oz.

Visualizations wise, you’d likely use DataMine… but you’d need a plugin for the specific hardware.

If AquaMonitor sold a WiFi version at a reasonable price, I’d probably buy it and write the code for it (it’s one of the missing links in my HA), but it also looks like they push you to have a base station, so it’s not clear if there’s enough information to have it push to Vera directly.

I am in Canada and I need it for Spain. I do not mind buying a pulse water meter for around $60-$70 and use it along with a device, but nothing on the market yet that I could find. Driblet http://driblet.co/ should be coming soon according to them, but I doubt it will be in the next 2-3 months. Honestly I do not understand why there are so many electricity monitoring system on the market, and nothing for water yet. I know water is cheaper, but still cost money.

Oops, thought you were in Oz because of the .au site you’d linked. Sorry about that

If you’re willing to put the flow sensor inline, then you can get these from a bunch of places. Pricing varies based upon pipe diameter, flow rate (etc), and you could roll-your-own driver using the Arduino stuff, since they all send simple pulses. You can also get COTS pulse counting devices, but the total cost may be more than you want (I have one in my electrical monitoring device)

Electrical monitors are a little easier to understand, since the benefit/tuning options are wide. Water flow sensors typically don’t become an issue until you have a big leak… when suddenly you understand their value.

I had a $400 excess water bill one month, because one of the sprinkler valves partially jammed. Since that valve was driving dripper heads, there was no obvious “sound” to go with that big leak of water. This is why I’m interested in ones that can detect both high and low flow rates.

The same thing happened to me. Over ?500 for water in one month, and now I need to know what is going on all the time. For electricity I am using Efergy http://efergy.com/us/products/energy-gateways/engageelitehub-185#.U0Gn540nKUk and I am happy with it.

I’ve been looking for something to do this for some time but thus far no joy. Hopefully if Lowes does bring out something it will be Wave and not ZigBee

Fingers crossed :D.

So you currently use Secure SWM 301 and it works for you?

I have used it, I have written up a (not so great) review about it here:

I am looking for an alternative as I also would like to monitor water consumption real time.

Frankly I doubt that any kind of “applique” device is the solution, too many different kinds of meters in use, terrible locations (ours is in a under-pavement box in the front walk), likely problems with the utility people when they show up to read the meter, etc. IMHO the best solution will be an inline device to be installed in the water line where it enters the residence. Obviously means a plumber (unless you are really handy  ) but still I think a better solution. However, I doubt that there is, or will be, such a device.

NO I do not use it. I am looking for something better. Most likely with wifi connection and web based dashboard.

Ahh I think I understand you.
No the SWM does not have a fancy UI to display its stats, more can you directly access it from the internet… That is what the Vera provides you? (Have you got a Vera? (Assumption as you posted on the Vera forum)).

Do in short… The SWM301 + Vera provides you what you want (and the vera is WiFi)

Yes I do have Vera, but I am using it mostly for automation. For my electricity monitoring I am using Efergy. I still have not seen anybody giving a comprehensive feedback using SWM301. I need real time monitoring and at least one year statistics for my water consumption. Do you have any experience with Secure water meter reader?

Is anybody starting a robust discussion of way to enable remote reading, display and analysis of residential water meters?

Those of us in dry sunny California are nervously awaiting mandated water conservation goals ::slight_smile:

I am DIY’er new to this forum but fairly experienced in the simple and quick was to digitally monitor water usage and some of off the shelf hardware publicly available at low cost.

My goal here is to stir up a hornets nest of interest and therefore wisdom on how you have or want to use Vera Lite and a pulse output water meter to provide real time knowledge of where our homes water usage is flowing noted in gallons, and better yet, how much our water bill be… albeit before the water bill arrives.

In the terms of a automobile Dashboard… many of us what to know "how fast is the water meter running (speed) and when will I run out of money (gas)

Larry

Nothing new, besides Water Hero coming may be at the end of the year.

Another californian here anxiously awaiting the summer water bills. Agree, would love to see something like this. All of takes is one sprinkler head going while we’re away at work, and we’ve spent a ridiculous amount of money.

I’ve got a bad foscam camera stuck in our water meter box just to try to easily get real time information, but so far having trouble getting a good signal. We’ve looked into the fortress valve, so we can at least shut the water off remotely if we have a leak, but without some way to monitor flow, it has limited utility.

Here is the hope. Crossing my fingers!

If it works, looks like that would do it. Though given the typical kickstarter timelines, would expect it’s going to be a while…

According to the people making it, should be ready for September, but on the other hand Driblet never took off.

Any news on this ? Anybody having experience with Secure SWM 301?
