VeraLite G100: Can't connect remotely "Unable to communicate with your unit"

I’ve been at this all day and about to smash my head into the wall. I’ve read knowledge base articles, the wiki, and so many posts on this forum (which is extremely informative btw!) and still can’t figure out what is wrong.

I have set a static IP address for my VL in my router settings, forwarded port 232 to it, and also added it’s static IP to DMZ on my router.

Now logging into the static IP works just fine, I can pair and unpair devices, control them and everything works great. EXCEPT sometimes when I click on some options on the left bar (one for example is Settings-> Backup) it redirects me to Login. I login and it redirects again to cp.mios.com with loading bar in the center saying something along the lines of “finding device to connect to locally” and a final redirect to my local static IP address (192.168.1.106). OK great, I’m back in the vera, but on the dashboard and not the option I want open (settings → Backup). It does this for several of the options on the left bar; even when clicking on the plus sign by “Users & Account Info”. Which means I can’t access anything under there. Extremely frustrating!

Now onto my main issue: When I do log into cp.mios.com (which I have to do on my phone with wifi off because if I don’t it automatically redirects me to the local static IP address) it says “Unable to communicate with your unit”. When Logged in locally under Settings → Net & Wifi it’s telling me internet access is OK and I get the following when I click on Troubleshoot Network:

I’ve replaced my external ip with x’s but it is showing up as the correct external IP

[code]=== IP Configuration ===
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0E:8F:92:E5:A0

I’ve even plugged the VL directly into my cable modem’s WAN port so it’s directly connected to the internet and it still wouldn’t show up on cp.mios.com which leads me to believe it’s something with the VL and not the router settings.

It’s telling me everything is OK, yet device is still not shown on cp.mios.com which means I can’t remotely control it. Any ideas?

Also how do I stop cp.mios.com from automatically redirecting to my VL locally so I can trouble shoot on the site? AND how can I stop the VL from doing it’s redirects when logged into it locally so I can actually use the options under “Users & Account Info”?

Apologies for the wall of text but this is really frustrating me and didn’t want to be vague.

Thank you in advance for reading!

UI5 btw and my router is a TP-Link Archer C7 if that helps any.

While I can’t answer all of your questions, I can point out a few issues.

  1. There is no port forwarding required for Vera. It is explicitly recommended that you do NOT forward ports to Vera. If you “have to forward ports for Vera to work” then you have a problem with your network/firewall/router. Do not forward ports to Vera.

  2. If you are using UI5, you should use cp.mios.com. Did you create an account and register/connect your Vera through cp.mios.com? If you created an account at home.getvera.com this may be part of your issue.

  3. Backup and user account info is stored and managed on the Mios servers. It is normal to be redirected there. It is also normal for you to be redirected to the local LAN for local functions when you PC is on the same LAN.

A couple of questions:

  • Did your VeraLite come with UI5 or UI7?
    1. If with UI7 and you downgraded, chances are it’s still registered to your home.getvera.com account. In which case, login there and remove it from the account. Then try cp.mios.com again and see if it shows up.
    2. If it came with Ui5. When you registered an account on cp.mios.com did it list your Vera? If it did not, something went awry.

I agree with Z-Waver. To remotely access your Vera via cp.mios.com or home.getvera.com no ports need forwarding. You may wish to undo the forwarding to eliminate that as a possible cause of your problems.

If when you registered an account on either cp.mios.com (UI5) or home.getvera.com (UI7) and no Vera showed up on your account, you may wish to email support@getvera.com and provide them with your email and the serial# of your Vera so they can check their database and verify it’s record is 100%.

I agree with you. The UI for the vera is NOT user friendly. I am still having problems with the mimolite that has yet to be resolved. The manufacturer tells me its the Vera code that is the problem. I am very knowledgeable about tech and computers and Vera is really testing my resolve. It feels like Vera is a work in progress and not a finished product. Now that home.getvera.com now takes you to a MiOS page I cant even login to my vera lite anymore. Ive tried EVERYTHING to fix this with nothing to show for it. Im about to throw it out the window!!!

If home.getvera.com takes you to cp.mios.com that’s an indication you are using UI5 credentials. If your Vera runs UI5 it requires login through cp.mios.com. home.getvera.com is only for UI6 and UI7 users.

I had to change my password for my secondary Vera 3 that’s now running UI7 as it requires a ‘special’ character such as !@#$%^&*() it seems. I go to home.getvera.com for it but still through cp.mios.com for my UI5 Vera3.

So if you upgraded from UI5 to UI7 you may have to create a ‘new’ account (same userID/email but password with one of those special characters added and see if it will let you add your Vera running UI7.

Thank you, creating a new account on home.getvera.com fixed it! Previously I was trying to add new device to existing account and it was forwarding me to cp.mios.com. created a new account, added device’s serial and MAC and now I can log into it remotely!

Glad to hear that fixed it…

In your first post you said you were running UI5. So, were you running UI7 all along or did you upgrade to ui7 or are you really using UI5?

Looks like maybe vera was updating, I can login today after having no luck yesterday. I have been on UI7 for the past while

That was my mistake, turns out it is on ui7. I think when we first got it it was running ui5 and my brother upgraded it to ui7.

How can you tell what UI you are using?
