Vera2 Remote Reboot

If anyone out there knows how to remotely reboot the Vera2, I would gladly appreciate your advice. Right not my Vera2 is stuck and cannot send commands to any nodes. Unfortunately, I am 2000 miles away!

This won’t help you now, but I (and others) have put Vera on a timer that reboots her once a day. While Vera may run fine for days or weeks normally, all you need is one lock-up and you’re stuck. I have mine reboot by putting her on an old fashioned mechanical timer that turns her off for 15 minutes in the middle of the night.

Also, once she is non-responsive, you cannot remotely reboot her. If you can get into the administrative pages, you can reboot her by going to Setup, Advanced, Tech Support and clicking on Reboot. At least on my version of the firmware!

You can also try to go into the OpenWRT pages (take heed of the warning in the corner), to get there also go to the advanced page, net/wifi tab then click the “advanced configuration” near the reboot button, then once in the OpenWRT page, click “system”, then on the line below, click “reboot” the on the last age click “yes really reboot now”.

If you can get to that page then it will reboot you!

@drzeller: I am using a UI4 beta firmware and have tried the reboot, which does not work. Your timer suggestion seems like a good alternative until this reboot feature is fixed.

@strangely: When I click on “Advanced Configuration” under the Net & Wi-Fi tab I get this: “The requested URL /cgi-bin/webif/info.sh was not found on this server.” Is it working for you? I think I clicked on there when everything was working before and it gave me the same error. This is similar to when you go to the Logs tab and click on “Track on myMiOS” and all you get is: “The requested URL /track.php was not found on this server.” 404 errors on both.

can you do a firmware change?
or
do a back-up restore?

This will cause a reboot

When I tried to make a backup all I get is a whole page of unrecognizable symbols just like in the picture. No file to save. So, right now I do not have a backup to restore. I could do a firmware upgrade to 1029 by direct link but I am concerned that it would do more harm than good due to the current status of the Vera2. Also, I’m not even sure it would work at all. As you can see in the second picture, that’s how my dashboard looks right now.

@zmistro: I found the backups on the myMiOS main page. I’ll see what I can do.

It appears to be a no-go. I downloaded the .tgz file from myMiOS and when I select it and click restore under the Advanced → Backup tab I get a “411 - Length Required” message. Am I missing something?

@ drzeller … do you have the timer on your modem and router too??? When I have a poer issue at the cabin I usually need to reboot the whole thing.

Perhaps raising a ticket and enabling the tech support back door may help may help as MCV may be able to reboot or fix it via SSH!

I did submit a ticket 2 days ago and still have not heard from them other than the automated email.

Hound them on the phone and PMs too!

If you can’t do the backup what do you have to loose if you do a fimware change. I would do that and then load a back-up from a date you know worked.

Ok, here’s the deal: I am really worried now.

First of all, I managed to get someone (not that computer knowledgeable) to go into the condo today. Just to refresh everyone’s minds, I was running 1008 and when remotely connecting to the Vera2 I got the screen that you see in the first image attached to this post, where the Vera2 says it is unable to get any node information for every node. Well, the person that entered the condo triggered some one of the Door/Window sensors and what amazes me is that I received a notification from myMiOS indicating such (as I set it up). That’s when I figured he was in and thought he had cycled power to the Vera2 and everything was working. I was wrong!

I called and he had not cycled the power to the box. The lights that were on in front of the Vera2 were the usual ones: Power, ETH1, and Z-Wave. The power was cycled and I went in again and the Vera2 is still showing the same screen and the devices are unresponsive to any commands I send.

I then decided to upgrade to 1029 and it did so OK. However, the problem is still there. I did not check to “Restore to Factory Default” because I do not know the extent of this command in terms of removing my devices from the control panel. That’s the only thing I have not tried and I am worried something else is wrong with it. I also tried restoring a backup but I still get the “411 - Length Required” message when restoring the .tgz file. When I upgraded to 1029 it asks is I want to backup, I clicked yes, and all I got was the gibberish that I have attached to a previous post.

There are two other buttons under the Z-Wave device menu which I have not tried: Reset Z-Wave Network and Reset Z-Wave Chip. Any ideas about these?

Any other help or insight is appreciated.

Clicked on Reset Z-Wave Chip and while it seems to have reset, it did nothing to change the situation.

Clicked on Restore to Factory Default and everything went downhill from there. Now I can’t reach my Vera2 at all! Would someone from MCV please assist with this situation…

Sadly, when I click on the Reboot button, nothing seems to happen. Also, when clicking on the “Advanced” link on the “Net & WiFi” tab, I get a “Site Not Found” error for the link: https://fwd1.mios.com/cgi-bin/webif/info.sh

I guess the only real option is the daily timer that kills the power and cycles the unit back on. I’m going to try that. The daily failures are a bit distressing and annoying. The thing is – it’s GREAT when it does work and really frustrating when it doesn’t.

I’m reserving judgement for now, but suggestions are welcome

@SteveGoldman,

If you’re remote from your Vera then the go for the timer or some other way to make sure you can reboot it if its critical!

I’m not sure the reboot button in vera’s advanced tab has ever worked in UI4, and I haven’t tried it in a while, but the advanced link has been fixed in a later version. Hopefully soon, some of the more major issues will be fixed and they’ll release this to everyone… by then you may not even have to use a timer or a reboot button

The reboot button does not work for me (V1@1.1.1047).

As a workaround I set up a scene with Luup code which reboots my Vera every day at 4:00:

os.execute('reboot')

Of course, the external timer is a better solution, because it is independent from the current state of Vera.

The external timer is the cheapest and easiest solution. I wanted to be able to reboot “on demand” my remote Vera and router. My solution was to put the Vera and the router on separate X-10 appliance modules each with a a unique X-10 ID. I then got an X-10 telephone interface from Fry’s Electronics and now I can power cycle my Vera and my router separately with a telephone call.
