I have had my vera for over a year now. I have not done a lot with it, but plan to do more soon. One thing that I do not seem to be doing is unplugging the vera and holding it next to the zwave component anytime I include. It seems to work just fine sitting next to my router. Is the unplugging and using the battery option just for when it is not working? Seems like a lot of trouble to unplug it from the network when you can just leave it on the network and use your laptop and the web GUI to include it.
Next, I have a linear wt00z to exclude from my network. My plans are to just go under devices and hit delete. Why won’t this do the trick?

If the device being included is too far away, the include process will fail. I would recommend that you continue full power includes and if it fails, fall back to unplugging Vera or using a long ethernet cable to move Vera closer to the device.
The newer Z-Wave+ specification, included in Vera Edge and many new devices, supports Network Wide Inclusion(NWI) which will include compatible devices anyware in teh network, so the unplugging process will be deprecated.

The exclude process, which must be performed, doesn't just delete the device from Vera. The exclude process resets the device itself to default, wiping out its network HomeID and NodeID. If you only delete the device from Vera and Vera later sees the device participating in the network, due to its retained HomeID and NodeID, then Vera will add it back to Vera's database.
Only deleting from Vera, rather than excluding, is appropriate only when the device has died or has been otherwise factory reset, as is possible with a few devices.
