Hi all, I know that many link their DSC or other alarm systems to the Vera, but I am trying to determine if the vera is usable as a stand alone security system?
I know that theoretically I could have a Vera connected to a Zwave Siren/strobe, a few motion sensors, etc. But is this really a reliable system?

Many of us who have an alarm system integrated with Vera installed the alarm system for that very reason reliability, cost, etc. I highly recommend you browse this forum as there are many threads discussing these very concerns.
