Vera 2 and Isteon 2413U PowerLinc Modem

I have a Vera2 running 1.0.996 and a Insteon 2413U Powerlinc Modem. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does. Does any one have it working steadily? Seems like my Vera2 is always showing the blue cog for configuring Insteon and Z-wave. Also when I try to do anything I usually get a “delivery failed” message. I’ve searched the forum, and found no answers.

I hate to tell you but you might as well get use to it. I am running same setup and have had problems just as you. Mine will show lights on that are off and off that are on. Most of the time I can control my lights and z-wave water valve but sometimes they dont. I have talked to technical service many times and sent in many tickets but they cant get it right. Maybe 1 day they will make this thing work right. I plan on trying the timer procedure as mentioned in another post. Where it reboots you vera once everyday. If you figure anything out please post.

Update:
Upgraded to UI4, and things are considerably better. I’m now able to more reliably turn things on and off. I’m not sure if it was a browser issue, VERA issue, or what, but now that I’m using IE8 and Vera UI4 things look and work better. The official word from Mios is that the 2413U is not supported, but this seems to be going in the wrong direction since the 2413U looks to be replacing the 2412U.

I just installed this setup a couple of weeks ago…

Vera2 (freshly updated to the latest UI4)
2413u PLM
8 X-10 dimmable wall modules

For X-10
The system takes a lot of time to run through the scene control routine if you try to send a discrete command while the server is busy… forget it.
Also forget the dimming capability for X-10.
X-10 is 1 way… if you use a remote to change the state of a device, Vera will not know.

I have not tried Insteon. Has anyone had any luck dimming Insteon? Does Insteon have any 2 way communications through the PLM

Thanks… D

I plan to convert all X-10’s to Z-Wave eventually but for now… I tolerate it.

I’m still using the 2412u, but has anyone gotten anything other than insteon light switches or outlets to work? I haven’t been able to get my scene controller or motion detector to work with Vera yet.

I’m not sure why your Insteon plugin is not configured but obviously you will get a delivery failed until it is.
As far as some days its working and others not, Is that the Insteon / X-10?
If you have a UPS or surge suppressor plugged in to the same circuit you will have problems. Even some power supplies for laptops etc. will cause problems.
Unplug all your power supplies, power strips, ups devices and try Insteon / X-10 again. Then plug your devices in one at a time and re-check after each device is plugged in.
X-10 does not dim with Vera, not sure about Insteon as I only have appliance modules. X-10 does not give two way communication. At the moment my setup is working great. FYI. Z-wave commands will be executed before X-10 or Insteon commands so there will always be a lag using Insteon / X-10.

JOD.

I just purchased the 2413U PLM and after reading this thread see that its not supposed to work. Well I guess I will return it to Smarthome. I don’t have any Z-Wave equipment and bought Vera because it was supposed to be so easy and support X-10 and Insteon as well as Z-Wave. Considering the high cost of Z-Wave devices (except thermostats), I like the Insteon devices better. They are easy to setup and can be controlled by a number of different devices, including my Ipad and Iphone remotely. The thermostates cost about $180 to $200 each so they are twice what a Wayne Dalton cost of $75 (dealer price). I am sadly disappointed at the peformance of the Vera and had great difficulty in first getting it setup as it didn’t see to want to get its DHCP address from my Linksys Router. Now unless I purchase Z-Wave devices, and without a PLM supported, how can I access my X-10 or Insteon device. I don’t know what Micasaverde expects us to do to use their system if there isn’t a method to commuicate the X-10 and Insteon signals via the powerline or wireless as Insteon does unless they incorprate those functions within the device as they have Z-Wave. If anyone wants to buy my Vera, I will gladly sell it for what I paid ($172 dealer price) since I am an installer of X-10 and Insteon equipment.

Mike, It is a very capable box and it looks like there is some support for Insteon and X10. However if you weren’t planning on using it for controlling anything other than a thermostat via Zwave then that seems a bit of a waste.

If you are an installer like you said, I assume you were experimenting? How about giving some feedback to MCV on its Insteon performance and perhaps trying to get them to improve it?

I too thought that Vera 2 running UI4 would include support for the INSTEON 2413U because is replaces the discontinued 2412U modem. In my case, I am unable to add a LampLinc dimmer after having tried numerous times. At this point in time, Vera does NOT support INSTEON because it is incompatible with the current generation PowerLinc modems.

Interestingly enough, I searched the Vera Mantis bug database and found that no one had opened a bug to provide the proper support. I just filed http://bugs.micasaverde.com/view.php?id=1358 so it is officially recorded that it is a known issue.

That said, does anyone know if there are additional logs that I can collect to provide the development team with additional information that will make it easier to diagnose and resolve?

I thought those of you interested in 2413U and Insteon support should know about this update that I received from Ovidiu earlier this week. Looks like we will see some first class Insteon support soon! I can’t wait to help test it.

Hi Bruce,

The answer for both of your requests is Yes. You can post freely this on the Forums and we can provide a beta release for you to test. But I will do this in a couple of days after my colleagues from QA are sure that the current version won’t brick your Vera. Final tests are ran as we speak, so soon is a few more days, one week top!

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hi Ovidiu,

Thanks for the update but when are you expecting to release the new firmware (i.e. what do you mean by soon)? Would you like me to test a pre-release/beta version?

Finally, may I share your general update with the forum members? There are many who are wondering about Insteon/X10 support.

Thanks,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

Our engineers have made a lot of improvements on the Insteon network on Vera. They are working on developing a new firmware version which will be out soon. You will be notified on the Dashboard when that happens and I can assure you that a lot of improvements happened, including this fix.

Thanks!

Cheers,

As a beta tester, I can tell you that work has been done to get insteon working. There is a fellow member on this forum who is also a beta tester and has insteon equipment. From my understanding the current beta fixed some issues he was having with insteon. But I can not be 100% certain.

What’s the word on X10 support (forget the quick dim support as that’s a limitation of the Insteon PLM).

Thanks

Insteon / X-10 is functional in the latest beta but only as far as holding the current state.
It still does not trigger Z-Wave in scenes.
In a prior beta, an external Insteon / X-10 trigger used to atleast update the UI to show it’s current state, now it does not.
Hopefully in a future release this will be addresed.

JOD.

I’m interested in this fix too. I’m considering a Vera2 for my Insteon network. But without the PowerLinc and the MotionSenor (perhaps other Insteon issues too)…I might have to go with a different controller…but I don’t want to! I looks like this bug is still in the Open state.

@JOD or @Blacey,

Do either of you know if there has been any progress on this?

I have the latest firmware and I desperately am seeking a cureall In-Wall Scene Controller that actually works with Vera. lol. The Insteon Smarthome 2486DBR8 In-Wall Scene Controller seems really nice and I would love for that thing to be able to function with Vera triggering scenes.

Same question as above, I have slow scene response from Insteon.

@iflyM3, the beta testers were just tossed a new bone so give me a couple of days to see what has changed in the Insteon / X-10 area. As you can see from 1.1.1186 there was nothing new to report.

@The Don, Vera appears to process Z-Wave stuff first, Insteon / X-10 takes the back seat, that and the fact the 2413U modem is sloooow anyway, there will be a delay of several seconds.

JOD.

Thanks for the replay.
Although I will say the same modem was instant with Indigo.

Sometime it’s pretty fast with the Vera as well. Would be nice to have it always fast, as i have no Z-Wave.
Thanks again for the update.

@JOD

Thank you kindly, sir.

Can anyone let me know how to upgrade this unit to the version that works with Vera 3?
