Has anyone hooked up a vehicle gate entry access system to Vera?
I am very interested in obtaining equipment similar to the Quikset or Schlage door locks that will open a vehicle gate much like my garage door opener relays that you can add or remove pins with Vera’s dashboard.
To open a vehicle gate should be pretty easy to do with an Insteon product since most gate motors are far beyond the range zwave.
But to integrate a keypad (or some other verification system) at the gate that integrates with Vera is beyond my knowledge of Vera’s capabilities and product relationship.
Has anyone had any experience in this or is currently using something like this?
I would love to get a chat with the very smart security professionals that frequent this board.
It’s possible to use an Android device, with a custom UI securing the rest of the phone functions. Ideally the phone or tablet would be within WiFi Range.
The default lock screen, whether pin or pattern could be unlock to reveal a custom UI.
A retired handset placed in a secure, weatherproofing case would potentially be hundreds of dollars cheaper than alternatives.
Interesting, an old android handset or tablet to use as a keypad entry device.
The first thing that comes to mind is how fragile it would be being outside near the gate even if it is enclosed in a secure box.
Although I do like the fact that you can use different physical entry methods such as, pin’s or pattern. I use to use the face recognize entry on my Google Nexus. I wonder if that could be implemented. Although most of the people using a keypad at an entry gate would be strangers, guests, maintenance people.
Not being within WIFI range would definitely be a problem.
The best way I can see to do this although it is just imaginary at this point is to have a hard wired keypad at the gate wired to a controller safely installed in a equipment room somewhere in the house that you can program with Vera and add and remove pins.
This controller hardwired to the gate would control the gate outside. The reason for the controller to be safely inside is so no tampering to open the gate could occur at the keypad.
Opening the gate for the home occupants could be accomplished without even pushing a button with current technology and apps available now. The owner would not even have to stop and could drive right on through.
The trick that I can see is to get an access system to communicate with Vera about the status of the gate and what access pins would open and or close the gate.
This could be pedestrian gates or motor gates on the property.
Awesome idea dkc, I just don’t think a android phone or tablet is well suited for the extremes of the outside.
