Using a dimmer switch as a scene controller

I have an Intermatic dimmer switch controlling a lamp. I would like turn on a z-wave outlet in the same room whenever the dimmer switch is turned on. To do so I created a scene that turns on the outlet, and while editing that scene, went to the triggers tab and created a new trigger associated with the dimmer switch of the type “a device is turned on or off” and set this to “a device is turned on.”

The scene when activated via the web interface turns on the outlet, but the scene is not triggered by turning on the dimmer switch. I appreciate any insight. Thank you.

This has been brought up many times and a search would provide you some answers. The intermatic does not support instant status updates. So when activating the switch manually, vera would need to poll the switch to get the status depending on how many devices are on your z wave network, this can take some time. So your scene will not activate instantly like you want.

I have a like setup. I hit a Zwave wall switch when I enter a room. The switch turns on a light and also a second light connected to a zwave lamp module on the other side of the room. You likely could do this via a scene but I found it to be slow compared to linking the two modules. If your wall switch can do it that is the route I would go. For me going to the wall switch device and then going to Device Options and then associations. Here I was able to setup a Group ID with the zwave module across the room. This links the two devices in a way so that when I hit the wall switch the module follows almost immediately as if it is hardwired to that outlet. No Scene needed!
If you are not exactly sure how to set this up I know I learned it from reading thru this forum so I’m sure you can do a search on associations and/or group ID and you’ll find step by step instructions.
Again though the wall switch will need to have this ability - not sure if yours does or not.

This works and very simply. Thanks so much for the idea. Quick recap on how to make a switch control a device:

  1. Select the switch in the UI and go to the Device Options tab, Associations and add a Group ID 1
  2. Use the “Set” button to set an association with the device you want to turn on and off with the switch from the same Device Options tab … that’s it!
  3. The device (in my case an outlet) now turns on when I turn the switch on and off when off, in each case with no delay.

I will add that the Group ID of 1 is not arbitrary. Similarly, to add a 4-button controller, then the associations will need to be 1, 2, 3 and 4. If you have multiple dimmer switches, they will each be Association 1. Device and node numbers are unique, but not association numbers.

Thanks!

Not easy to document a feature that is NOT available on all devices and/or controlled the same way for those that have it.

The Z-Wave devices are not quite as ubiquitous as many believe them to be.
