Is anyone aware of a USB connected SMS sender device that could be made to work with Vera? I get Vera notifications over SMS using Twilio via Vera Alerts but I’d like to look into a alternate path around the Internet connection; if its down Vera and the house go on running but it can’t tell anyone anything
A number of years ago I had a Nokia phone with a serial interface that was connected to one of my office Windows servers. It was able to send SMS from a monitoring application but that phone isn’t compatible with the current mobile networks so that’s out.
One possibility for a one-off device might be some kind of Arduino-controlled device with an SMS shield using the MySensor generic interface but I don’t know if that would work or not.
I’ve been thinking of something similar. My requirement is to enable my Vera to alert when alarms are triggered in the scenario when a sneaky burglar cuts the phone line. Don’t know if they do that, but my Vera has a dependency upon the visible and exposed phone line for comms while I’m out of the house so I’m thinking about mitigations.
My work in progress idea is to use a Raspberry Pi, a USB-connected GSM ‘dongle’ and a prepay SIM. Gammu appears popular if you search for ‘pi sms gateway’. My hope is that I could use LUA to make an external call (HTTP maybe?) to the Pi and that call would include the message and destination phone number for the text (although that could be hardcoded in Pi scripting if needed). I’ve not really tried to achieve this yet… but when I’ve got time to tinker, this will be my my approach.

Therese Are several sms gateways you can run on an old Android phone.
