unit not available for assign?

New to Vera…used to have a house setup with X10 and a SmartHome controller. For our new house I bought the VeraLight from Amazon and an indoor Aeon Labs Smart Energy Switch z-wave B007UZH7B8 to learn the basics before buying a bunch of stuff for the house (light control, sensors, camera, lock, etc.)

I’ve heard the documentation isn’t great, but this forum is excellent. I read through the new user FAQ (links), thanks!

Here’s my potential issue, not sure if it’s a real issue.

When I followed the instructions that came with the VeraLite: creating an account on http://home.getvera.com, after entering the serial number and MAC address I get “unit not available for assign” and no further instructions, no link on the website to FAQ or troubleshooting and I can’t hit the continue button.

Sooooo, I used the Googles and read that I might not be able to register at getvera if I have a UI5 device, which I apparently have.
I connected to the VeraLite on my local IP network using my Macbook and the browser tab says UI5, so I guess that means I’m running UI5

The VeraLite setup window then said I need to login to my account. I tried the GetVera account I created, but it was not recognized. In fact, the password does not allow symbols while the GetVera does, so I’m guessing this is an entirely different server. Mios?
I created a new account without issue and was able to upgrade the firmware to 1.5.622. I was also able to add my Smart Energy Switch and remotely control it.

Are Mios and Vera separate companies?

Can anyone confirm that because I am running UI5 I get the “unit not available for assign”?

It looks like I can download apps now through the User interface, am I missing anything because I was not able to assign the unit to GetVera?

Thanks, appreciate the help.
Ian

Same company.

UI5 uses one website, UI 6/7 uses another. Just different log-in security credentials.

Common advice is to stay on UI5. UI6 is dead and looked to be a bridge between 5 and 7. A crumbling bridge but that’s a comment for another post. UI7 is just in Release Candidate 1 status and isn’t ready for primetime yet.

@lacartus,

Welcome!

Correct.

(I believe that if the device is running UI6/UI7 you wouldn’t see this message / Vera would be auto-discovered. So it was in fact indicative of this being a UI5 unit, and thus cannot be accessed through the getvera link, but rather requires the cpui5 link.)

I’d say you’re all set; start from here, and see if you can find a reason to upgrade change to another UI version.

Thanks RHINESEL and oTi@!

It’s good to know I’m not missing anything. I added a few devices and have some basic controls in place, can’t wait to automate more things.

For those searching on this topic:

  • If you get a Vera controller that has UI5 on it, you will get the “unit not available for assign?” message if you follow the instructions telling you to go to the getvera.com/setup URL.
  • you can check your version by connecting to your Vera controller from a browser (e.g. 192.168.1.###, whatever IP your access point assigned). In the browser tab will be titled with the version (e.g., UI5)
  • For UI5, go to MiOS and create a new account

Vera support was closed on the weekend, but responded early Monday morning, thanks Vera. (btw. would be nice if the getvera site had a link to the mios.com site)

I checked your Vera Unit in our database and it runs with UI5 firmware version. Please go to https://cp.mios.com/login.php and create a new accout. You cand use the same username and email address that you used before when you created the account from home.getvera.com

After you finish your account please go to cp.mios.com to login and start to assign the unit.

NOTE: Only if you upgrade to a newer firmware version you wll be able to acces home.getvera.com, until than please use only cp.mios.com

Please let me know how it goes.
Thank you.

With, as far as I could tell (based on one observation), the added notion that units may be tagged for a forced upgrade to something beyond UI5. So they may be UI5 out-of-the-box, but then soon upgrade automagically to UI6; and so, depending on how quick you are, you may conclude it’s a UI5 model and take it from there, only to find out that minutes later it’s now UI6, and you have to switch accounts.

(newby also)

  1. I did the “Please go to MiOS” but that brings me just to logging on my VeraLite on my local network

  2. I stil do not understand if and why I should login in om getvera; which gives the message “Unit not available for assign”. As far as I understand I must have this to be able to operate my VeraLite remotely …

  3. in an other discussion the issue came up that the unit was defective: “Thanks for the replies. Vera tech support said my unit was defective (!) and I just got the new one today. Crossing my fingers for better luck.”

@hinod,

Welcome!

It depends on what UI version is running on your Vera. The cp.mios.com portal is for UI5 and older. The home.getvera.com portal is for UI6 and UI7.

  1. When you use cp.mios.com on your local network, it will attempt to connect locally, just as if you keyed in the local IP address of your Vera running UI5. (e.g. http:///cmh/?token=)

When you use cp.mios.com remotely from outside your local network, it will connect through one of the many fwd(some number).mios.com.remote. (e.g. https://fwd6.mios.com/remote/1.5.622-en/?PK_AccessPoint=&token=)

  1. There are currently three versions of the Vera operating systems out there as already mentioned. UI5 (firmware 1.5.622), UI6 (firmware 1.6.something) and UI7 (firmware 1.7.something). UI5 is currently the most stable and most plugins will work with it, UI6 was a disaster, UI7 is still in beta, but for a new user with few devices may be a valid choice.

Veras running UI5 is accessed from cp.mios.com.
Veras running UI6 or UI7 are accessed from home.getvera.com.

There was a change in security for the newer operating systems, hence the new access path.

  1. It may have been that Vera was defective, I haven’t seen the post.

When you access your unit, you can go to Setup and then firmware to see what version you are running. If it is 1.5.622 you should be able to use cp.mios.com to access your Vera locally or remotely.

Have you tried to access cp.mios.com from a computer connected remotely?

Once you verify that works, there are also many apps for iPhone and Android that can also access your system remotely.

Newbie…

Despite being on UI7, I will get the error “Unit not available for assign”

Able to log into dashboard, but unable to register. and I guess support is closed for the weekend

I have been using my Vera Lite successfully for a month, but today when I tried to log in I got a message saying that I had not yet assigned a controller to my account. I could access the controller locally by using the local IP address, but it seems messed up - can’t arm or disarm sensors for example. I tried re-adding it to my vera account, but it just gives the message “unit not available for assign”. Any ideas? I’m afraid I’m going to have to reset it and start all over again - exclude and reset all my devices, then include them all, rebuild all the scenes. Is vera always this bad?

i got new unit of veralite. it has the same problem. it is not working both mios as well as getvera.
pl help
software version 1.7.481
In getvera.com 'unit not available for assign "
not able to proceed.

Just got brand new VeraEdge today, which came with UI7. The first thing it did was upgrade to 1.7.961. It’s working fine on my network but I cannot add it to my account on getvera.com. Same error as the rest here, “unit not available for assign.” So it would appear this is not a UI5 vs. UI7 issue, or the wrong website. And it’s not an account conflict because i don’t have any others! It’s something else.
