Two questions about Switches..

Two questions about Switches…
Leviton switch appear to require that you use all leviton remote switched on 3 and 4 way circuits for both dimming switches and on/of…
Has anyone tried to use conventional switches for the remotes?

I have some circuits that are 4 way and that will get pretty expensive, so that leads me to question number 2. Is any one using a switch that doesn’t require the replacement of the remotes in a 4 way… If so what is it and will it work for CPFL and LED as well as incandescent…

Looking for an economical solution for 3 and 4 ways dim and on/off…

Thanks…

Answer to number 1 - You must use Leviton’s devices as they are communicating and not just a standard remotes. For example you would need a VPI06 and 2x for the VP00R.

Answer to number 2 - Wayne Dalton’s 3-way dimmers (HA14WD) allow you to use existing single pole or 3-way switches as remotes.

I actually use a HA18WD as a 4-way, and it was a pain in the butt to get wired, and if I ever had to remove it from the wall I probably wouldn’t be able to get it put back again. But it does work good.

On a similar note … is there a single switch/control that can be used as a virtual 3-way thus not having to run a traveler between switches or wiring to light ???

Over the years I’ve always viewed 3-way switches as an opportunity. Put a controlled switch in one of the locations, put one of the single-gang 4-button controllers in the other, and program one of the 4 buttons to be the light which the 3-way controlled, leaving 3 more buttons at that location for additional programmable functionality. In this case, possibly the VRCZ4, although unfortunately this is not an inexpensive solution.

grybrd, you might be able to use cooper RF9500 for your purpose, expensive but works well

Thanks for all the input … one last question. Would a Leviton VRCS1-1LX work … looking at the installation manual it can be just a scene controller ???

You can use the VRCS1 as a virtual 3-way remote for swtiches or for multiple dimmers. You can use the VRCZ1 as a virtual 3-way for a single dimmer.
