TV Overlay For Events/Notifications
Sadly, it will not stream encrypted channels :frowning: They don’t mention that specifically, but I can assure you it is.

ClearQam/Unencrypted only with DLNA. There is one provider whom I’m aware of that does allow streaming the CableCard channels…It’s FIOS (I can’t confirm) . . .
FiOS (not as much now). Until sometime last summer, FiOS flags on all of their encrypted channels (HBO, CineMAX, Showtime, etc.) were all “copy freely”.

I have the HDHomerun Prime and also various HD TiVo boxes (all with CableCard) and have enjoyed downloading movies unencrypted from these channels to my video archive computer in my basement. This way through either the HDHomerun and/or the TiVos, I could record and stream back to all computers, TV sets (that have the TiVo attached), smart TVs through DLNA, etc.

Last summer, FiOS changed their flag for the HBO & Cinemax family of channels to “copy once”. This means that each CableCard device (including the Prime) can still both view live, AND record one of these encrypted channels, but can not share with any other device. This defeats the “free movie library” that I’ve been able to collect on these channels.

I’m not bitching, since technically the HD or SD content does not belong to me (please, no discussions on fair use in this thread) but it sure was cool.

If I record a movie for the archive (I prefer the TiVo for initial recording as opposed to the Prime), I now have to double check to make sure that it is not on HBO or Cinemax.

I suspect that sometime in the future, FiOS will have enough pressure put on them by the pay channels to eliminate the copy freely flag for all of their pay channels. Hopefully not the sports providers.

Anyway, sorry to expand the off-topicness, but video recording via the Prime & TiVo is a subject that interests me.

The original topic of TV Overlay is extremely interesting also, but I’ve yet to commit to running HTPC servers for whole house viewing. My family has a hard enough time with TiVo, HDHomerun, & the various FiOS DVR offerings.

The only limitation I have is I don’t get HBO / ShowTime and the other extra pay channels from comcast due to the Copy Protection Flag.

Since I don’t subscribe to any of those channels, it’s not really a limitation I am concerned about. I still get all my Discovery, AMC, Disney, etc…
