Restoring from a backup may help. I just had a recent problem with a Trane thermostat and I started losing devices across my network as a result. My scenario was “unable to configure device” messages galore. It seemed to start after I unsuccessfully tried to install a lamp module, but that may have been coincidental
Anyway, fast forward…I restored to an earlier backup (approx 1 month old). Next, I deleted the thermostat from the dashboard, and a new thermostat device showed up in the dashboard (instantly, and with a new device number). Since then, all is running normally. It was the weirdest thing. Never seen anything quite like it.
At the risk of sounding really dumb, what is the z-wave dongle?
I was able to add back the GE light switches and Kwikset lock without having to exclude them, but I did need to exclude then include the Trane thermostats.
All is now working normally, including the thermostat that caused the original problem.
One last question/observation?Using Safari on the Mac, the restore process failed with an error message about not being able to unpack the compressed file.
I got into the Vera using IE 8 via my Windows emulator, and the restore went fine, and the .tgz file unzipped perfectly.
OS X Macs can handle most zip files normally; what’s the deal with this? Is not being able to restore from a Mac using Safari a known issue?
In the early Vera days … Z-Wave was provides by a USB dongle. It is still refers to this in the documentation.
The Z-Wave dongle … in the newer Vera’s is an internal daughter board.
When you restore the Z-Wave Dongle you are restoring the previous Z-Wave configuration.
This information is your Z-Wave network – unique to your Vera — and what has been included in the Z-Wave network. This does NOT contain info like the Device Name, Room Name, and preferences that are set after the device is included. That’s done through the NORMAL backup. If you have problems communicating with Z-Wave devices … it’s possible the Z-Wave chip and network needs to be reset to a previous state. That’s what the Z-Wave Dongle backup provides.
The normal Vera Backup saves the Logical Device settings/customizations for your Z-Wave devices plus all of your non Z-Wave devices, plugins, scenes, …

I have heard that folks have trouble with Safari. I use Firefox on my Mac and have no trouble. I’ve never had a need to run my Windows virtual machine to do anything with my Vera.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I was able to get my devices re-added without resetting the Z-Wave network (dongle) setting. But I’m glad to have the knowledge going forward.
I just added a Trane thermostat last night, and every single other device on my network is now non-responsive. WTF. My network has been solid for about a year now, and I’ve added devices here & there with no issues.
I’ve restored an old backup to no avail. This is not good. I don’t want to go back & add 30 devices.
Did you restore the Z-Wave Network (Version 6.22) ?
I think it was called the Z-Wave dongle prior to 6.22.
I did, successfully, when I tried again this morning, thanks.
However, my backup was apparently 3 months old and I lost a device or two. I’ll have to re-add those today. And I still don’t have the Trane thermostat connected. I’m concerned I won’t be able to connect it without having to relearn everything from scratch. I’ve seen nothing on these forums that suggests a procedure other than what I’ve been doing.
[ol][li]Vera 2 on battery pack within 3 feet of Trane thermostat[/li]
[li]Exclude Trane thermostat[/li]
[li]Reboot Vera 2[/li]
[li]Include Trane thermostat[/li]
[li]Reboot Vera 2[/li]
[li]Every other device loses connection to Vera 2[/li][/ol]
I knew the thermostat was OK because it responded; it was just the only one!
After restoring, re-associating some devices that had been lost, and then excluding/including the Trane again, all is well. Now to rebuild my temperature scenes… argh. Thanks for the help.
