Tablets with Qi Wireless Charging

I currently have several Nexus 7 (7") tablets for control panels using ImperIhome. I’d like to replace one of them with a 10" tablet in the kitchen — the 7 inch is just the least bit too small.

So I’m looking for a reasonably priced unit WITH Qi Wireless Charging and I haven’t found one yet … very few units say anything about charging

The one linked to in the article will not charge a tablet adequately, but there are others that will output more current, like this one:

Funny, about a half hour after I posted this I was on eBay looking for something and stumbled over several of these. They come with the USB plug oriented two different ways depending on your device. This makes any tablet practical then.

Thanks for the pointers.

You’re welcome. Just remember the key is to get one that is rated at least 1000ma or above, this is what you need in order to charge most tablets.

Let us know if you get something and how it works out. As you said, this solves a lot of the generic tablet as a HA controller charging issues.

Right now I’m working on a Qi solution for the existing Nexus 7 in the kitchen. The tablet is mounted to the end of a cabinet group at the entrance to the kitchen.using 3M Command Strips. I’ve got a Qi transmitter without a box, just the electronics and the coil. I’ll drill a 3/16 hole in the cabinet behind the tablet and glue the coil assembly to the cabinet side between the Command Strips with rubber cement. (If I change in the future the rubber cement will come right off leaving only a small hole to fill)

The electronics will go inside the cabinet in a small plastic box with a USB cable going down through the cabinet bottom to an outlet below. The Nexus then sticks back on the cabinet and viola, wireless power to the tablet (I’m already using a variation on this solution for a tablet in the Living Room so I’m confident it will work just fine)

The next step is to find a larger tablet and get one of these USB Qi receivers to replace the Nexus.

I’ve really been wanting to try this with my Acer 7" Iconia tablets. Three questions…

How the heck do you determine the orientation of the USB port? Does “narrow interface up” mean pointing towards the screen or the back?

Also, this looks like one of the better adapters, but for a tablet the connector ribbon is pretty short, meaning you can’t place this in the center of the tablet back. This means if you use a little Qi stand, it will need to be off center?

Last, how the heck to you get the back off the tablet? Mine (acer) looks like it’s maybe glued on… i’m afraid to start hacking at it.

Thanks!

So I ordered one of these coils last week, and a separate wireless charging base/stand…It worked great, but the problem is that the ribbon from the USB to the coil is very short, as it’s made for a phone. As such, it doesn’t reach the center of my tablet, which is where it needs to be to balance on the new charging stand.

So I thought i’d see how handy I could be and solder in two extra inches of wire, as there are only two leads. Suffice to say, it didn’t work. I must have burned something out on the coil :frowning:

Oh well… a $13 experiment is pretty good in this hobby, but now i’m back to the drawing board.

I found several on EBay that looked like they had longer lead ribbons so I ordered a few to experiment with

Great .let me know how it goes. Can you share which you ordered?

no problem, for what its worth, i ordered this one from eBay:

I chose this one because it claims to have a 35mm long cable so I’m hoping that’s enough.

It supposedly has arrived at the PO Sorting facility in Chicago so baring it being routed through Seattle and Portland Maine I should have it in Miami in a few days

Thanks for the heads up ClipperMiami. I realized I could do this with my 7" tablet as well. so to move it from velcro’d to the wall to on a QI charger on the side table next to the couch for easier access. Grabbed a 2nd kit for my LG G2 as I realized I can stick the receiver between the phone and my ballistic case.

I went to AliExpress as I foudn a seller there that seems to have multiple lengths of cord and 1000mW output and you can have both USB orientations. They are on sale right now for $4.88 with free shipping.

QI receiver:

And found this charger at $4.27 with free shipping

I’m figuring with the longer cable on the receiver, this one should handle a 7" tablet just fine.

Excellent, please let us know how it works out and I will do the same

Looks good, but I can’t figure out how to order the longer cable version??? of is it the same one, and the cable extends?

Love the directions … step 3 remove coil after charging. Kind of defeats the purpose

laughing I saw that to. Most likely a CYA statement. Mine is going between my phone and my case so it’ll be safe and protected. There is no way to specify the cable length other than ordering and putting in a message for the seller regarding the length. Which I did so I’ll see. It should arrive before the end of January as it most likely will get put on that proverbial slow boat from China.

Be careful with some of these. I found a number of them both on Fleabay and Ali that listed like 500mA or 700mA capacity. Which is not nearly enough for a 7" tablet or a current high end phone. The link I posted shows both pictures and lists specs of 1000mA capacity which should be adequate for both.

I ordered a few myself. Thanks for the links. We will see if they do a better job than the ones I received from Amazon rated at 500MA.

If anyone else is ordering from that AliExpress link, please be aware.
I just received this pertaining to the length of the charging cables.

Hi dear friend,
Thanks for your order in our store.
But the charger receiver tail only have one length as the picture.
We will send 2pcs type A and 1pcs type B to you,ok?
Waiting for your early reply.
Best regards,

It looks like it is the middle length as they originally showed varying lengths. Oh well, as I wanted a long one but as long as it is 1000ma, I think it should work well.

Thanks for the update on the length. I’ll see what the send me. My shipment seems to have left China…

What lengths did you order?

I gave them the device models I intend to use the chargers for and asked for cable lengths matching the devices. No response so I’m waiting for the package to arrive and see what I got…

Thanks.
