Suggested Cameras for Veralite and Vera Edge

Hey guys, I was wondering if you can give me some cameras that are compatible with vera lite and vera edge. I’ve already tried the Vista Cam HD. Are there any more security cameras you can suggest.

I would suggest any camera not wireless and maybe not even controlled by vera. VERA is a terrible DVR.

I already tried smart things, so what you mean is that the vera is not suggested for IP Cameras?
Does it buffer alot?

It puts an unwanted load on vera running the images from the camera threw vera then to your device (phone/tablet/computer) Vera also doesn’t have a way to delete your images from their server. It’s also not good image quality or playback.

One camera your not going to see much of a problem. When you get a few cameras your better off using a real DVR/NVR to store camera recordings, and view live images from the cameras or the dvr.

Almost any camera (IP camera) your going to by can be streamed directly from the camera to your mobile device bypassing the middle man. Depending on camera it may or may not have a SD card and recording directly on the camera. Vera has no storage on it and the hardware specs are less then a raspberry pi and way less then my samsung cell phone. Power is not it’s strong point.

I leave VERA to the home automation not the security cameras.

You’ll also see many of us also have alarm panels (most tied to vera). The alarm panels handle the day to day security and vera handles the automation. Having them share data is ok but pushing everything into vera leaves less then desired results.

Thanks for the heads-up, so that’s why the Vista Cam has some issues when I access it thru phone, it seems to be working via desktop.

I’m not sure what phone you use or what app, but certain apps (imperihome I use) that you use to control vera will also directly take IP cameras in the same app. So from the phone/tablet stand point you would never know if the camera was in vera or streaming directly from the camera URL. Vera stock app has alot of limtations that other apps don’t. Custom page layouts, custom icons, and more.

Vera is very verstile due to the abundance of outside sources (plugins, apps and such). you just need to find what works good an what doesn’t. Built in geofence by Vera also doesn’t work as well as other sources. Don’t fell locked down or limited by the few limited options vera gives you.

And Welcome to Vera by the way!

I stopped using Vera Edge to handle my camreas. Useless, very slow, temperamental. I use Imperihome a lot, and much much better, IPCam viewer Pro, an app nothing to do with Vera, to view my cams.

I’m using Imperihome to view my camera’s as well, works fine but it does not truly stream but it’s stills that refresh every few seconds.

Then your are not doing it correctly. It should stream, the only way it wont stream is when you havent clicked on the device and your just viewing the icons from a page. You can set the settings on that to adjust the refresh rate but it will not stream live until you click on the device and it opens up full screen. It then switches over to your RTSP or MJPEG stream URL and streams it in full FPS depending on your phone internet connection ofcourse.

Hmm…I’m going to look at that tonight, thanks.

I use two Foscam FI8912W v2.1 and they work flawlessly.

However, the setup is tricky and tests your soul.
