Spoken or sound notifications for iOS possible ?

I have push notifications installed, and prowl on my iphone and ipads (jailbroken iOS 6.1.2). This works fairly well. What I would love to have instead (or as well) is play a sound file associated with that notification. So i have a notification ‘close window’ which pops up via prowl. It would be great if I could have that as a spoken message on my iphone/ipad too, so have different sound files associated with different notifications or events.
Has anybody achieved that (in a way an intermediate level user would understand) ?

I get a call which a spoken notification: door open

So how did you achieve that ? My guess it is not that easy ?

Warning: it is not for free.

I use the Twilio plugin (search on the forum) with a Twilio account. Copy the correct code into a scene and run it when eg the door opens…very simple.
I do not use this for evey notification, only when I am abroad and have no wifi/3g access

One way you could go about this, with limited functionality using your current configuration, is to set a different sound to each Prowl priority, and set a different priority to each event for which you want a spoken notification. Assign priorities as follows:

2: “Door open”
1: “Some other event”
0: “Some other event 2”
-1: “Some other event 3”
-2: everything else

…and in Prowl just configure the notifications for each priority. In this way, you’re not actually setting “priorities” so much as you are “categories.”

Just a thought. And easy to do, especially if you’re not already using the prioritization scheme.

@Chrismaison

I have spoken to you about that Twilio plugin on another thread, just did not have a chance to follow up and install it. Just read through the Twilio api thread, it does not exactly do waht i want (as far as i understand). I would be able to get a phone call with the text or sms. what i wanted is my ipad to play a customisable sound file when it gets a prowl (or anything else) notification

@DeltaNu1142

I think that might be a starting point, that would give me 5 different sound files to play, correct ? I think the way to achieve this is to record the sound files, and then convert them to ringtones, add to the ipad/iphone and then to assign to the levels ?

Yes, that’s what I was thinking. I would record FOUR, and leave the fifth priority for general notifications, but that would be up to you. That’s the limitation I was talking about; you’d be able to have a maximum of five spoken/sound notifications.

It’s a very straightforward way to do what you want to do with what you already have.

I think i will use that as an interim solution. But i will still try to find another solution which is more flexible. I think it would be nice if you have your ipad/iphone give you voice messages for various events/notifications !
Ideally you want to be able to pass a variable with a text string to the ipad and then have that converted to voice. Maybe worth mentioning in the homewave thread as a feature request ? I have just installed homewave but not configured it yet, but i think you can send notifications to homewave

I have created my custom sound files with the voice memo app, but they do not show up in prowl settings on my iphone.

I think the sound file has to be tweaked in or out of iTunes. I don’t remember how to create custom alert tones…

EDIT: Ah, right. I remember doing this:

http://iphone.appstorm.net/how-to/utilities-how-to/how-to-create-and-set-custom-alert-tones-in-ios5/

I would think if you have a jailbroken iPhone, it would be even easier.

@DeltaNu1142

Just looked at how to convert on google and found something similar. Problem is none of the ringtones show up as an option in prowl. So although it did sound like an easy option, if i cannot choose my cutom sound files in prowl it will not work.
Will do some more research on google to see if i can use custom sound files in prowl
Maybe at the same time start another thread on here and ask about prowl

The process above is for alert tones, not ringtones.

I see what you mean. It wont work though (read below) , but i have found a solution (although a bit fiddly)

I found this with google:

So to change my Prowl sounds, this is what I did:

  1. Open Transmit, and connect to your iOS device, head to private/var/mobile/Applications/

  2. Change to list view, then select all (command-A).

  3. Hit the right arrow on the keyboard; all the folders will open. You may get some errors, click OK and ignore them.

  4. Type “Prowl” (without the quotes) in the Transmit search box in the upper-right corner of the app.

  5. Locate Prowl in the results, click it and choose Get Info or hit command-I You will probably get another error, it’s safe to ignore. (Edit: at this point you can probably just right-click Prowl.app and choose “Open in New Tab” to skip steps 6-7)

  6. Take note of the strangely-named folder it resides in, named in the Get Info window. In my case, it was similar to “2H56C56A-38A1-45BD-935D-43F3S21BDF6D” (without the quotes)

  7. Navigate to this folder, and then within Prowl.app (which is a folder), and there you will find the sounds.

The sounds can be replaced only with files which have had their names changed to match the ones already there. Other .caf files will upload, but won’t show up in the available sounds list in Prowl.

I used a number of sounds from Adium soundsets and one from my old Macs:

Emerg. - Uh-Oh! sound from “ICQ” Adium soundset (mono) (chime.caf)
High - 1UP sound from “SuperMarioWorld” Adium soundset (stereo) (rezso.caf)
Normal - old sound from my System 7 days called “Symphonic Whisper” (stereo) (bidi.caf)
Mod - AOL “Yoohoo” sound from “Sexy AOL Sounds” Adium soundset (stereo) (beep.caf)
Low - Coin pickup sound from “SuperMarioWorld” Adium soundset (mono) (elysium.caf)

I also would like to be able to get text to speech ability on iPhones.

I’m using an Android, and it’s got VeraAlerts rocking individualized TTS messages per scene, giving me updates of my house affairs.

One of my clients heard my phone indicate that my girlfriend has come home, and wants her iPhone to do similar. I told her I’d research it, but I doubt that I could get her phone to replicate this exact effect, but that I might be able to get something more limited.

No way to get Google Cloud Messaging Service running on iPhone I’d imagine? Even if we could, I imagine a new app would need to be written. Just a thought.

I have thought about doing a Vera Alerts for IOS … Maybe something to do while I am travelling for the Holidays.

That would be totally cool! Thank you for considering it!

Yeah, this would really be swell. Thanks for considering @RTS.

Can’t wait to see what you come up with. Thanking you in advance

Anything new on this. My Androids do this without a problem with Richards Vera Alerts. But I would like the same on my fathers iPhone (well actually i would like him to get rid of the piece of crap) but next up would just for this to be able to work.
