I just recently purchased a Vera Lite unit and have it all setup and all my X10 devices added. I plan on slowly converting to z-wave over time. I have a Kwikset 909 keypad lock on my front door and just purchased the Home Connect z-wave daughterboard and installed it. I’m having trouble with the pairing and unfortunately, since this is my first z-wave device, I’m not sure where the problem lies. The procedure seems simple enough, so here’s what I’ve done and what I’m seeing.
I’ve moved the Vera Lite to within 2 feet of the lock. I’m using the AC power supply and I can still keep the VL connected to the internet.
- I go to the advanced z-wave settings and choose to do a full power include as one of the docs said a security enabled device like the locks require that. (http://docs5.mios.com/doc.php?page=kwikset_lock). I set the timeout for 30 minutes.
- I verify the VL ready light is flashing once per second.
- On the lock, I remove the battery pack and press the black program button 3 times.
- I replace the battery pack in the lock and wait for the red light next to the include button “B” to go out. Then I press the “B” button (upper left button, not the program button).
- The red light on the lock goes back on. After about 10 seconds, it briefly goes off, then comes back on and stays on.
- The ready light on the VL just keeps blinking once per second.
When I had the timeout set to the default of 20 seconds, or up to 10 minutes, in the UI, I would see 0 devices added after the timeout. When setting a long timeout like 30 minutes, now what I’m seeing, is that after some period of time but before the timeout, the ready light just goes out. The light on the lock is still lit, but nothing happens after that. The VL is still active and I can still access it through the UI. If I do a reload on the devices page, the ready light will go back on steady.
I’ve made several attempts at this, but the lock never pairs. I’ve put a fresh set of batteries in the lock even though the existing ones tested just fine. The trouble is that I’m just not sure what I’m supposed to see. I’ve seen several forum posts where some people seem to say things happen right away. Others say they had to leave the Vera unit next to the lock for several hours for it to show up. Since some posts are a few years old, I’m not sure what the most up-to-date info is. I usually do a reset of the z-wave network before each attempt since I have no other z-wave devices to reconfigure.
One thing I’ve noticed on the lock, is that even if I don’t press the include button (on the lock) after installing the batteries and when the red light goes out, the red light will come back on after a few seconds and just stay on. Is that normal behavior? Is that red light normally on all the time?
Before I contact the seller of the daughterboard and try to return/exchange it, I want to be sure I’m not doing something wrong.
Alot of times you need to exclude the zwave device first, then go through the include proceedure.
Sometimes the factory will test the device so it will be included to a different network then yours when you get it.
Just a thought.
Also, in general, doing an exclude is a good way to test if Vera and a new device see each other.
And one more thing, you do not have to keep the vera on AC power. Just unplug it, and pair it under battery power just like the instructions say. I have over 50 devices paired to my veras and never had to keep it plugged in. It does not use the internet to pair a device.
FYI from youtube:
Exclude the lock first. This is how you do that.
Push the “-” (minus) on the Veralite. Then push the activate button on the Kwikset lock. Look for the rapid flashing orange light. If you see that the node has been excluded.
Now remove the battery pack from the lock. Push the bottom button at least 3 times. Insert the battery pack and wait till the orange light at the top of the lock unit goes out.
If you have the Veralite into AC power and the ethernet plugged in to the network, then go to “Add Devices” and follow the directions.
Once you get to the screen where it tells you to add a unit, go to the lock and press the upper left button. Then wait till it shows up on the screen of your computer. It can take up to 10-15 seconds to show up sometime. If you don’t see it then push the button again on the lock.
If it doesn’t show up, then start at the top and exclude the lock again.
I have installed 10 of these Kwikset locks and they are rather problematic to add to the system. Just keep at it and it will eventually work, hopefully.
Also make sure that there are no bent pins on the computer module in the door lock. I found one lock that would not activate and pulled out the module and found the bent pin. I straightened out the pin and it paired at the very next attempt.
Thanks for the responses. The problem was that I needed to do an exclude first. I found a video on you tube where someone showed the procedure for installing one of these daughterboards in a Kwikset 909 lock and he said someone recommended that when adding any new z-wave devices, you should exclude them first. I excluded the lock and then included it and it paired immediately. The whole include process took only about 5 seconds and it showed up right away in the dashboard.
I didn’t understand that even though I was resetting the z-wave network in Vera, that a device itself that might have been paired to another network won’t allow inclusion until you clear the device.
Please Help! I have 2 Kwikset deadbolts that were included on a previos Vera. I believe that they were never excluded. I would like to include them on a new Vera and have not been able to.
I have called the manufacturer and they told me that there is no way to reset the locks to factory default.
I have tried removing the batteries, pressing the program button 3 times… No luck.
Is there anyway to make these locks useable?

Did you go through the exclusion process before trying to include them?
you have to do that, particularly if they were already part of another network.
I don’t think so… I beleive that that’s my problem
follow the instructions on your vera to exclude the locks first. then include the locks.
your vera can take away the association with the prior devices, but it cannot add them unless they ‘know’ they are available.
