significance fo "scene capable" device

Hi,

I’m relatively new to Z-wave automation. I have a VeraPlus and several dimmer/switches and plug in module dimmers. I’m running only a few scenes each triggered by time of day.

I’m reading the manual for my Leviton VRPD3-1LW and it lists “Scene Capable” as one of its features. I am missing the significance of a control device being “scene capable”. When I setup my VeraPlus I created a scene which would send the required commands to multiple dimmers (in my case 2, a Leviton and 2gig). It would seem the basic function of a dimming device is to receive commands and perform the requested function(s).

Is there more to a dimmer module’s capability?

Thanks

JohnRob

Unless there are devices that are not capable of running in a scene, such as a device that doesn’t return status data back to the controller, of which I know none…

I would say that statement is part of the marketing scheme to increase the length of the list of “Features”…

Probably included by an office person that was creating the documentation for the device.

@additude,

Thanks… that makes sense.

Does it have something to do with instant-status dimmers and switches? If your switch doesn’t provide instant status (and many don’t), the vera doesn’t know if you pushed the button. Sometimes it takes a few seconds or even a minute or two for the vera to realize the button was pushed. So those switches would not be reliable for starting a scene because the scene would not be triggered right away.
