Scene setting to unlock 2 locks at once

I have a Schlage lever lock and a Kwikset deadbolt on my front door. I did manage to create a scene that unlocks the Kwikset when the unlock code is entered into the Schlage. I only worked intermittently at best. Most of the time when it did work, it was way too slow. And a few times it worked great, but that was few and far between. I’m very new at this and could use some help with this project. Thanks for any help that you could give.

shouldn’t be like this, the usual suspects:

  1. how far is your Vera from the locks?
  2. if it’s relatively far, do you have z-wave nodes capable of “beaming” to reroute the signal? the more the better
  3. could there be interference from old cordless phones or baby monitors that use ~900MHz frequency
  4. if you unlock the Kwikset using Vera’s UI manually, does it work well or intermittently?

Since locks use encrypted signals, they are slower. And if they aren’t processed right away, they are considered “stale” and discarded.

I don’t have 2 locks on the same door, but I do have 2 locks on different doors. If I try to do something with both at the same time, things don’t go well. I have a delay of 10 seconds between operations.

Unfortunately, with 2 devices on the same door, a 10 second delay would be annoying.

capjay,

Vera is located about 15’ from the door locks, but there is a wall between them. I could install an outlet just on the other side of the wall from where Vera is located and there would be nothing between the outlet and the locks. There is a cordless phone mounted about 4’ from Vera, but it’s new within the last couple of months. When unlocking the Kwikset manually from Vera’s UI, it seems to work pretty well, but I will have to take a closer look.

PurdueGuy,

Yes, I think the encrypted signal might be a problem and you are absolutely right, a 10 second delay is totally unacceptable.

Thank you both for the comeback. I will keep you posted on my progress.

I’m curious, what was the delay when “it worked great”?

When it worked great, it was almost instantaneous, but that was only few and far between. Anyway, testing has been suspended for today. I wanted to move the deadbolt up higher on the door so my grandson won’t be able to let himself out. The original hole had to be filled and painted. Then the hardware will be reinstalled when the paint is dry.

One thing I forgot to mention. I’m running Vera in wifi client mode. I wonder how much difference it would make if she was hooked up to my router through an ethernet cable.

i doubt it’ll make much of a difference.
