There is a project someone I know is working on and I thought I would post some information on it here.
At the current moment it supports android devices but what it does it is uses RSSI information for any access point your device can see to triangulate your position in your home. (as long as you have the device with you) this is something that is going to be the next evolution in HA because of the availability of a WiFi card in a wearable. In most homes (well in the US) at any given point there is a bunch of access points that can be seen. you do not need to be able to connect to them. all this does is it reads the mac address and the signal strength of each of them for any given point in your house. because those readings will only occur at one specific point it is able to calculate where you are. You would put the software into a learn mode and walk around the room. and then you would poll the server for where your device is (server can be located in your home or in the cloud). The accuracy is very impressive. I have seen accuracy reports of within a foot or so. You can get more information on it here https://www.internalpositioning.com/ and the GitHub page here GitHub - schollz/find: High-precision indoor positioning framework for most wifi-enabled devices.
Before my electronics got zapped and I had to replace everything. i was actually using this and having it update a MQ channel and have it show up in a variable container in Vera.
It works pretty good I think. But I live in the middle of no where and i went and bought 10 esp8266 WiFi micro controllers and set them into AP mode just so they could broadcast and give me more AP’s find could use to calculate the position more accurately. I would suggest anyone using it to do this as the ESP’s are really cheap 3 dollars or so.
One big question for me comes from trying to find a way to track the motion/occupancy without having to carry the phone. I dont wear a smart watch and have no plans to ever wear a watch again. If I get up in the middle of the night and head down the hall I want the house to know it. Possibly a combination of several things could do this, but I dont necessarily want it to think the master bathroom is occupied all night (where my phone charges at night) and not know where I am.
Maybe if there were a small thing it could track that could be worn, sure. I’ve thought about RFID tags if I could set up one of the RFID tage linked below to be embedded in the arm of my glasses (it’s less than 4" long and has a read range of several feet) and enough sensors to pick up all movement.
