I’m trying to rename a Aeon Labs Z-Wave Energy Metering Smart Switch name from “_SmartSwitch Energy Meter” to “_Kitchen_Ref_SmartSwitch” but it keeps reverting back.
What could be causing this?

Have you pressed SAVE after renaming?
What browser are you using?
Yes on the save, and latest version of FireFox. I can rename any other device with out any problems.
Something is causing it to revert back because it will initially show the changed name, and then after the “Busy” notification it reverts back.
This isn’t a child device of anything is it? If so, then the parent could certainly do this and presumably has a setting somewhere (device variable?) to change the child device name.
Not a child; well at least I dont think so. There were no other devices created out side the one when I paired it to the Vera3.
Do you think because this is a smart switch; Vera is locking it?
I don’t know about the smart switch aspects, but you’ve not, perchance, got two bridged Veras?
No, only one Vera. I’m new to all this so I’m sure I’m missing something. Problem is, I don’t know what I don’t know… ![]()
Try clearing the browser’s cache.
If that does not resolve the issue, try excluding the device then reincluding it.
My final thought is that if your Vera Lite has a lot of devices and plugins(dozens), consuming all of its memory, there may not be sufficient space to save the config. Check the free “disk” space.
Tried the cache, didn’t work. It’s a Vera 3; with just a few plugins.
How do I exclude a device on the Vera 3?
See the last paragraph on this inclusion example page.
Rename the device to something that does not start with an underscore. Underscores are Vera’s way of telling if the device has been given a human name or if it’s still got its default.
Ah, at last. Somebody who knows, rather than guesses.
Another ‘feature’ that should be documented more widely.
This must be the answer.
The recommendation from @Futzle is as good as any and is well worth trying. However, I have a few renamed devices prepened with underscores. I’ve seen nothing yet that suggests that underscores cannot be used.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to help… In the end Futzle was right on the money…
Excluded switch, rebooted Vera, Re-Included Switch, Saved, Renamed to _Kitchen_Ref_SmartSwitch and sure enough name reverted back… Renamed again, dropping the underscore and it “stuck”.
I must say, that I have other devices that I named that have starting “_” and Vera seems OK with it…
Should I remove those devices that I began the name with an “_” ??? ??
I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the magic underscore applies only to Z-Wave devices handled by LuaUPnP. If you’ve installed a plugin from apps.mios.com then you are probably free to call your device anything.
(I’m going to name my next band Futzle and the Magic Underscores.)
Guys,
I know this thread shows Resolved but I found a case where underscores are not in the original name (plugin generated - Ademco Vista Alarm Panel with EVL3)
… I still could not rename the devices (24 different devices)
… When I used an underscore then Vera kept the user-entered name.
I don’t want underscores. Any idea on how to fix?
thanks!
