I need to replace some devices that do not work properly and hang up from time to time.
As all the devices are embedded in various scenes, I really don’t want to rewrite all the scenes. What is the less painful way for a device replacement?

I have the exact same question. Pity you never got a reply. Maybe now someone will notice and know an answer to this?
There is NO way to have a new device take on the role of the old device.
It would be a nice option to be able allow the user to specify the Device ID of a deleted device when you discover a new device. This would solve this problem.
So currently you will have to fix up all of your scenes and references to these devices by other plugins (PLEG, PLTS, Combination, SmartSwitch, …).

I recently had to do this with a failed device and I was unable to edit the inputs in a PLEG. The save button never appeared. So I had to add a new device and change my conditions accordingly.
Just a FYI
