Recommended Sensors for scene control

Just got my Vera Lite, installed my Kwikset front door lock and now looking to start converting lights to zwave. I was wondering if anyone could give me an assessment of good motion sensors that I could use inside the house to control lighting…lights on when descending dark hallways at night, stairways, etc. I assume that I can use the Kwikset lock usage to control turning on lights at night so I don’t need door sensors. I also don’t’ want to break the bank putting these things in too. From what I saw so far, some of these sensors are battery powered and fairly inconspicuous…another plus.

Your suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Worthwhile having a look at alarm panel integration topics.
If you happen to have an alarm, you may be able use the motion detectors of the alarm system.

If you need wireless, zwave motion detectors/sensors will do the job though.
Surfing the forum will give you some more idea.

I have an HSM100 with good success. I will install that outside to be notified of people walking up to my front door. I’m also going to get another one to put in the upstairs hallway that will turn on some lights in “low” when it’s dark enough.

I also purchased some Aeon Labs Door/Window sensors to turn on some lights when I open the door.

I too have the Kwikset lock set to turn on some lights, but there is a delay. I assume is it the encrypted communication between the lock and Vera, which means I am often times inside the house in the dark, not able to disarm the alarm panel (it isn’t a lighted keypad), and I have to wait a few seconds for Vera to turn on some lights. I plan to set the Aeon Labs sensors up to directly turn on a light (if possible), or see if Vera is quicker to respond to such events.

I usually enter the house through the garage … I turn on lights when my Garage Door Opens and it’s night time … If there is any delay … it does not matter … It takes a moment for the door to fully open and for me to drive in. It turns on the lights I used to turn on manually when I first came home after dark.

I am thinking the best way to determine that I am leaving … when I figure that out I will have the garage door close shut everything down … in case I forget!

I also have an HSM100 with good success. It just takes a while to configure … give it 30 minutes after it joins the Z-Wave network to get fully configured.

Thats a great suggestion. If a wireless alarm kit also contains a motion detector without breaking the bank, it will be good value for money.
Dont want to hijack this thread, but dont want to open up a new either, as the OP and I are almost on the same page, and the motion detector along with an alarm looks like a good suggestion, trying to ask here itself.
Will this work with Vera?

The alarm kit comes with Motion detectors, doors / windows sensor etc.
Can all this be controlled with Vera 3?

@Exorcist,
You’ll need to pick one of the Panels that’s already supported by Vera, and get Wireless sensors for it.

Have a look at this recent thread

I have a couple of questions for Alarm systems and senors. Should i open a new thread, or can i shoot my questions here, asking the OP and the mods/admins.

I have a Schlage door handle and I use that to trigger the interior lights when I come in. Occasionally if Vera is busy doing something (I don’t know what if no one is home) there is a slight delay but usually the lights come on before I get in the door. I also use the Everspring SM103-1 door/window sensors on my garage doors to turn on the garage lights when the door opens (and turn them off 10 minutes later). I like the Everspring better than the Aeon Labs door/window sensor because the Everspring uses inexpensive AAA batteries rather than the button batteries of the Aeon Labs sensor.

See if you find the thread that fits best. If not obvious, just launch your questions here. After all, the thread is about motion detecting sensors to be used by VERA (scenes)
