Outdoor Rated Sensor

Anyone know if the current Vera Supported Sensors are rated for outdoor use. In particular, I’m interested in the 3 in 1 Homeseer sensor. It appears to be suited for indoor use only. Maybe it can be weatherized.

I would like my porch light to turn on and off with motion late at night, and it would be nice to get the temperature as well.

Likewise, I would like the basement light to turn on when I pull my car into the driveway by the basement door. (Not as important as I just ordered the Schalge lock and that should automate that light)

Also, I hate batteries in permanent fixture devices unless I have to. Has anyone successfully hardwired power to a sensor? I assume it’s just using a transformer, but would like some tips if anyone has been successful.

I don’t think any of the motion sensors are rated for outdoors. Depending on the outdoor climate, you could buy one of those security camera domes and place it over the standard motion sensor outside.

Could you place the motion sensor behind a window facing the outside?

Although expensive, if you want the temperature outside you could place a thermostat in one of the intake ducts in your building. That will give you a fairly accurate measurement of the air outdoors. Of course, if the temps get below freezing the thermostat may be ruined.

Rather than a motion sensor for outside lighting, I have just timed my outside lights to turn on at sunset and off at sunrise. Lighting the outside this way adds full time security. Kids tend not to go near the edges of buildings that are always lit up. I provide very few shadows for burgs to lurk in around my home at night  I also randomly cycle a few outside lights during the night to keep any lurkers “guessing”.
I use compact fluorescent bulbs in the outside lights so less energy is consumed while leaving them on all night.

You can also install prominent “dummy” cameras around the property. Have your real surveillance cameras recording the dummy cameras. This way when a potential intruder “inspects” the dummy camera, you can be recording them with the hidden camera. I have a small sticker on the side of the dummy camera that reads “This is a fake camera. There is another hidden camera recording you now…” .

It’s funny watching people read the sticker, look around in all directions, and promptly leave the premises. I’ve never had to release the dogs using this setup.

Thanks for the suggestions
I already have my porch light turn on at sunset and off at 11:15. But rather than leave it on all night (security and all night illumination not as a big concern, we live in a rowhome) , I just wanted it to turn back on after that if someone walks up, say when we come home stumbling from the bar

I’m considering putting one in the window though, wonder if anyone else had any success.

As for the temperature outside, I have one probe left on my IP thermostat, I may just wire that outside.
