In recent weeks, the level of SPAM Postings on the site has increased substantially.
The Moderators/Admins are quickly removing these posts, but it’s a manual process that wont scale as the community scales.
At this point Users with Email “Notify” enabled are probably seeing most of these, since they tend to be removed within 30-60 minutes.
To encourage each user to poll, I’ve set it do you can see the results after you’ve posted.
I’ll leave it open for about 2wks and, if sufficient votes are taken we can use this to encourage that option to be pursued.
As a side-note, the MCV-Team enabled the Email Validation functions on account establishment, and on Email Address change. Users will now be required to have a valid Email account, that they have access to, in order to create a new account.
IMHO Captcha won’t be very efficient here. I think we should complicate process of creation new accounts by having them manually approved by mods, and then gradually weed out the existing spammer users
@325xi, I’ve added an extra option for something “automated” that can be used to validate your account during setup.
I’ve been deliberately vague in it’s definition so people will post their ideas here, but it’s designed to cover a variety of things such as:
[ul][li]Some questions asked during account creation that could only be answered by someone with a Vera, planning to get one (etc) - questions would need to change over time obviously.[/li]
[li]Using the Vera ID from your box[/li]
[li]other ideas that people post here.[/li][/ul]
I’ve avoided any manual approval, since it’s often hard to do that with any form of accuracy, without slowing down the process to get started, and spamming the Moderators and Admins with bot-based requests.
I vote no CAPTCHA, you just made me realize why I like this forum…it is easy to post…IMO Captcha would kill that for me. Any option other than Captcha sounds good to me.
