Newbie

Greetings all,

I am a new (and proud) Vera3 owner. I am slowly getting up to speed on this technology as I implement new components. My first batch of z-wave accessories include the following:

  1. Vera3
  2. 2 x light switches
  3. 4 x duplex receptacles
  4. Trane Thermostat
  5. Schlage lock
  6. 2 x everspring temperature/humidity sensors
  7. 2 x aeon door sensors
  8. 2 x power dongles

I look forward to sharing my experiences and I am continuously combing the forums here to hear and learn from others.

I hope to implement other devices in the near future:

PoE cameras (compliment home security)
Whole-home audio control (I use Sonos and an Aton audio distributor)
garage automation (when did I leave that darn door open?)
doorbell (program to send image/email when we are away)
Integration with home alarm system (arm/disarm and notifications)
sprinkler automation (keep the lawn green and manage water consumption)

I just renovated our home and as a result I ran CAT6(x3) and audio(x2) in many areas so this will compliment my whole-home automation/obsession… I am a technologically-inclined person (I am in the IT profession and a former technology writor for a magazine) so I am interested to learn more about the customizations/tweaks as well.

I installed/paired my first light switch (had to dig in the box to ground and neutral to get it to work), later realizing I will need more repeaters for Vera3 to speak with it (before I put the switch into the box, it was communicating fine, I guess the receptacle box introduced more barriers for the signal to pass through).

I am open to all suggestions and look forward to sharing my experience(s)!

cheers.

Looking forward to seeing you integrate all this! I come from electrical, and the integration is always the best part to this whole project!

Welcome.

I’m curious what brand of in-wall switches you’re using. There have been some reports of GE brand switches having difficulties when mounted in metal boxes (working fine when out of the box, not so when mounted.)
