My apologies if this has been addressed already, but I haven’t found much through the search.
I have a Vera Plus with just a flood sensor and door sensor linked. I’m compiling my wish list to really make use of the Vera. I am looking for outdoor cameras and I’m very interested in the new Nest outdoor cam. The location I want to add the cams will make use of the included power cord and will easily connect to my Wi-Fi. The included magnetic bracket is a big plus for me.
My problem, I don’t want to pay a subscription fee to store video clips. I’m searching for a way to connect the cams to my Vera Plus and save recordings to a PC or an external hard drive on my network.
I’m hopeful some integration may be on the way with Google announcing that their new speaker product will work with Samsung’s Smarthings setup. Until that happens, anyone using this camera with a Vera?
Hi Nameless, cameras that have a pay wall are difficult to integrate. The best thing I can tell you it to try it and see if it will integrate. We offer a fantastic outdoor camera in the VistaCam 1100 that is powered over ethernet. The reason that we took that path is so you can place the power supply inside; there are many outdoor cameras that you plugin outside, that is a problem because most don’t have a weatherproof power supply. The second issue there is outdoor outlets are not intended to have something plugged in permanently to them. My house didn’t even have GFI outlets installed outside.
We store camera images and videos in the cloud, and we thought a great deal about that; when one is burgled and the bugler sees a camera they tend to look for the DVR and computer. Storage is included at no charge with every controller we sell and there is an option to buy more if you want or need it.

I appreciate the information. The VistaCam is another option I’m considering for certain locations. Areas that are too far from my router will likely get a PoE setup. Unfortunately, the primary location I want to put a camera is on the opposite side of the house from where I can run an Ethernet cable out. Wi-Fi is my best bet there. I also have an outdoor weatherproof GFCI outlet right where I need it. The VistaCam doesn’t have an outdoor rated PoE adapter, so I may struggle to power it.
The outdoor Nest Cam is looking like the most cost effective option for me…if it weren’t for those pesky monthly fees. I guess I wouldn’t mind paying for online storage, but it would be nice not to be tied to one manufacturer.
