Neat little internet device......

There doesn’t seem to have been much news coming out of CEDIA…
Nice!

I saw the FLASH-Lite interface that the MIOS guys had residing on a Samsung TV at Cedia. Pretty nice interface!
wseverino, how did I miss you coming by?

Our kiosk was back to back with MCV, on the other side. If you’re still in town, stop by again tomorrow…Sunday.

It would be cool to put a face to a screen name, if you’re already back home then maybe CES next year

The Samsung interface is very cool and probably will force me to get a Samsung TV as soon as it is finished and in their app store. I like that it is alpha-blended over the content on the screen.

Hmm, new TV…

Any idea which Samsung TV’s the feature will be supported on?

anyone that supports Internet@TV

FYI, Sony Dash is currently on sale at Dell for $100.
Infocast used to be on sale around Black Friday at Best Buy for $100.

I personally have owned both Dash and Infocast for half a year. And also picked up 2 more Infocasts on sale for hacking/reflashing.

Dash out-of-box is a much nicer alarm clock and can stream wide selection of audio/video, including Netflix and Hulu, but who wants to watch movies on 7" screen? Dash has underpowered CPU resulting in slow interface, is very closed and locked down, and doesn’t run all Chumby apps, only approved by Sony…

Infocast has bigger 8" screen (4:3 instead of widescreen, like Dash), much faster CPU and interface, and very hackable and reflashable…

Update: Infocast is currently $80 at Best Buy!

That’s cheaper than Black Friday at $99 Best Buy and I kicked myself for not getting one then, maybe I’ll have to now.

I returned my orginal one that I purchased because I wasn’t sure if I’d have time to create a flash-lite interface for UI4, but it sounds like MCV has something in the works for it. I did like it as an alarm clock, even though their forum leaders swear up and down that was not its purpose…even though it has a snooze button ::slight_smile:

edit: it looks like they have a smaller Chumby sized version now too, at a sale price of $49 but this screen size won’t be as good for Vera control or even to view your IP cameras (yes there’s already an app for that).

Thanks guys, you just cost me 80 bucks! ::slight_smile:

Me as well…I hope shady is right about MCV developing an app for this

I couldn’t resist it. Will pick up the box at Best Buy later today

Picked up one of these yesterday at the local BB for 60$ (open box)!!

I wouldn’t pay 100$+ for it, but its a neat little device for such a bargain.

I was seriously considering this device but am holding out hope for an Android tablet…that’s what I really want (and an Android version of SQ Remote)!!!

It’s back to $169.99. My wife stopped in there today to pick one up for me for Christmas for me and ended up getting a Dash because it was $20 cheaper. I am going to take the Dash back and wait until after Christmas when they will probably lower the price back to $80 or less for the insignia (or something better will come out, or I will find a decent android tablet to pick up cheap).

Picked it up yesterday. Nice device.
Anyone able to put a browser on it yet? I know there are instructions on the web for a usb image Web Browser (Page 1) — Insignia Infocast — chumbysphere forum, but when I extract the files on a usb and reboot, I get a smaller resolution web interface (maybe for the 3.5" unit?) and no touchscreen ability.
Would be nice if the vera web interface could be on it.

I successfully ran the Browser using the instructions and the USB stick. The only problem is having to reboot the Infocast to get the Browser up. I was able to use UI4 with the help of a stylus for scrolling up and down the page due to a smaller side scrollbar. I even modified the config file for the browser so that it always opened to UI4 initially, that way I wouldn’t need to plug in a USB keyboard each time.

I never found the Browser useful as it wasn’t an app that could be run within the UI. I did like the IP camera app and found that useful but I had problems getting my Foscam to pan/tilt (I believe I was able to get the image to work though).

In which case I will wait for the MCV team to cook something up for the infocast then. Can live without the browser in the meantime. Shady, I hope you are right about MCV making an app for this.

Yikes, please don’t quote me…

and even if they never get around to it, somebody could pretty simply make a simplified UI interface. I was thinking of just having 6-8 scene buttons and then you just add the needed Vera information for the scenes on the Chumby website when you go to add the app (very similar to the IP camera app where it asks for the IP address of the cameras, etc.). Having a full Chumby front-end for UI4 on the Infocast may be asking too much, but firing off scenes should be easy enough and would be enough for bedside control.

quote from MCV communication— “…and the Chumby Picture frame interface (which was demonstrated at Cedia where WSeverino saw it and due to launch this month)…”

this excerpt confuses me a bit, because what was demonstrated at CEDIA was the Samsung TV interface which could possibly run on Chumby/Infocast because it was built using Flash-Lite but the layout wouldn’t be ideal for the Chumby because it is a framed GUI that frames the TV picture (not using the whole screen), but maybe the code is easily used to create a Chumby speific version. I would vote they optimize it for the larger screen Infocast and not the smaller screen version, but I realize there are users with both.

It appears that Best Buy just put these two units back on sale today. Sale price is $99 and $49.

FYI, Adorama sells Sony Dash for $100:

Short comparison of Dash vs. Infocast:

And, BTW, speaking of the Vera app for Chumby (or Dash/InfoCast etc.) - don’t have your hopes too high. I’m personally thinking of re-flashing and running a customized UI on it, as I consider the Chumby platform very limited on its own, plus Sony/Insignia limit it even further… :frowning:
