My VeraLite arrived today. Can I do anything without any devices yet?

So I ordered my VeraLite earlier than planned due to a good deal. It arrived today and I connected it and updated the firmware. I don’t yet have any devices so its arrival and installation is rather anti-climactic. I ultimately will be ordering a DSC alarm and using it’s motion sensors, door/window sensors and smoke detectors. I also plan on adding a Yale Zwave deadbolt (or several perhaps). I plan on using automater.app and homewave apps for my iphone as well. My question may be silly, but is there anything I can really do with my vera to ‘prepare’ it? I created my rooms. Should I download plug-ins yet for DSC or the deadbolt (if needed) or should I just wait? It pains me to have my VeraLite here and not being able to tinker with it.

You could add the weather underground plugin and setup some virtual outdoor weather sensor devices

Leave the DSC plugin until you have the system.
You can download virtual switch, combo virtual switch, countdown timer or PLEG etc to get a look at feel.

Cool. So are apps and plug-ins the same thing? I just hit the app store on my vera UI and searched on Denon…installed a Denon app I saw and it appears I can now control my denon AVR2112CI receiver volume and inputs. This gives me some satisfaction that I now have a useful application for vera. I’ll now start looking at others. Thanks.

Mine just showed up 2 sec ago as well. Same boat as John… Not sure what to do with it now since I don’t have any devices to plug into it. May very well do the same as John and download some apps. My shopping list of items is pretty long that I want but first up will be the door lock.

John, looks like you are leaning towards to the Yale lock. I am leaning that way as well. I am a little bummed that it is so much more expensive than the Schlage. Where are you buying the Yale from? I can’t find anywhere local that seems to carry it.

Got mine updated and all notifications currently work. On the setup screen under unit settings what does “do you want to secure this Vera:” option really do?

What other apps do you guys suggest? I don’t see an app for Sonos system or Pioneer receiver :(. I saw nest and the other apps already mentioned above seem interesting.

Is there a main goto iPhone app for all this?

I’m not aware of a local seller of Yale lock so I will likely just order from Amazon. I might also order a schlage from someplace that offers no hassle returns so if it doesn’t work out, then I get money back. So the lock will likely be my next product to the mix but will have to wait after I return from a trip next week. I am anticipating some signal strength issues given I won’t have any other z-wave devices (yet), but I will likely go the external antenna mod mentioned in another thread…initial findings are promising that it helps resolve range/mesh issues with the locks. I then anticipate incorporating a DSC system which I am sure will be a little challenge.

I’ve heard the automation.app and homewave are two excellent iphone apps but of course I have no experience (yet) with either.

Sonos is not currently available via the App Store and is a manual instal:

Thanks for the heads up. So the apps etc that we download into the Veralite such as the Sonos or the Yamaha or nest etc or other integration apps do they show up on your iPhone through homewave or something? I see many things have interfaces into Vera based on the apps you download and i would like that same single point of management on the iPhone/iPad accordingly.

Is that even possible?

Plugin support is dependent on the developer of the app. Not all plugins will be supported and not all functionality.

You can also start creating your scenes, such as:

  • Arrive home
  • Leave
  • Bedtime
  • Alarm Breach
  • Outside lights at Sunset/sunrise
  • etc

Then as you add devices, just add device-specific entries. Tweaking scenes is usually takes the longest for me to get settled (delays, etc). (Not counting LUUP code & testing!)

You can also get push notifications setup. MiOS Apps
