So here I am, browsing the forum, thinking about new which new gadget to buy. It’s all light switches and the like. Honestly there aren’t too many lights left in the house which haven’t made the change. What I really want is for the house to say stuff to me. Like greet me when I open the door. I’ll happily install speakers everywhere. What’s next? I’ve read suggestions about using squeezbox and that’s not going to cut it. I’m obviously going to have to go much more diy. I’m completely open to suggestions here. There has to be some way to have something respond to scenes by playing a recording. Maybe some arduino setup? This is one important area which is severely lacking in home automation.

You’re just full of surprises aren’t you? It looks like you hit a dead end with MCV and kmod-usb-audio though. At any rate,this looks like it would give Vera the a ability to make noise, but how to give it noises to make?

i was looking at this nice looking foscam here which has a 2-way audio stuff built-in and also a speaker… but how to make it speak lol

Can anyone here recommend it?[/quote]No… I would not give this advice… Karotz is really dependant of Violet servers (bought by Aldebaran) and is not reachable in local LAN (you could do a direct TCP-IP connection but you would compile a google protobuf into an even luup plugin). So, to be able to get the Karotz tell all you need, you must have a broadband internet connection and the Violet servers must be running.
Yeah, and also all your communication comes from a little toy rabbit. Not to classy, especially when you have whole house audio.

If you’re prepared to spend some money a Sonos setup would do what you need. I’ve made a bunch of pre-recorded text-to-speech files which Vera tells Sonos to play when certain scenes run. Works fine.
Interesting. If you are listening to music can you have it resume the song afterwards?

You can send to an individual or any collection of units… This via the controller app not sure if the upnp controls have this ability.

The Sonos plug-in for Vera allows you to select a file to play, then play it, for any Sonos device - so although the plug-in doesn’t (yet?) support linking of devices like the Sonos controller does it would be easy to ask each device to play the same file.
I assume you mean that the audio would work through Vera, I have a couple of iOS apps that support 2-way sound from my Foscam PTnoZ and the speaker on that camera is horrible (there is a jack for audio, but I haven’t tried adding a set of computer speakers to test). I’d love to have a good 2-way audio intercom solution for the front door and if the camera speaker was any good it might be the way to do it (even though if they yelled I’d probably hear them anyway).
It looks like Sonos is the way to do it, but I am sure if you wanted to use Airtunes and Airport Express units you could use @fall-line’s plugin for itunes:
