Mount monoprice motion sensor in corner?

Hi all,

Just wondering how you would suggest I mount the sensor in the corner of a room? Is there a recommended bracket I should use?

Thanks.

…maybe a link to the sensor, or a photo, would help?

The Ecolink Z-Wave PIR Motion Detector (PIRZWAVE2-ECO) comes with a plastic mount specifically for corner mounting. I put it up last night with double-sided foam tape. I can’t find any images of the mount, though.

Images added to the OP. The back is basically flat. So I guess I need to buy some kind of bracket to fit it in the corner.

I just took some of the velcro command strips and just adhered it on one side (the to sides are angled so it will fit in a corner).

Another option is to cut a block of wood to make a wedge that is as wide as the back to go into the corner. If you open the motion sensor and remove the circuit board, you’ll see there are in fact 2 keyholes that are not cut all the way out. Take a small knife and remove them. Then adhere the block to the wall put 2 screws where the keyholes are, and boom, Bob’s your uncle!

Doing it this way, you can even angle it up or down as needed by cutting your wedge appropriately.

I like a good DIY solution.

It’s important to note that the monoprice one already angles down in it’s casing, so it’s good to actually test it in a few different configurations.

For instance, my Schalges (similar case) will pick up cars driving down the street from my porch 70 or so feet away. The monoprice don’t sense until they are walking up my front walk, which is more like 20’ away. All because of the angle of the sensor in the monoprice version(same exact location)

Never noticed the sides are angled. LOL that should work for me. Thanks for that insight!

I have 5 of these. I just cut the dual sided tape that comes with them into 2 about 1/4" strips and mounted those on the angled sides of the sensor. Piece of cake to mount them in the corner that way and you even have a few degrees leeway to angle them. Make sure to leave enough room on top so you can access the tab to remove the cover for when you need to change the battery.

Use the iDoorContact plugin to activate the temp sensors that is built into these.

I just purchased 4 of these things, and so far I’m not impressed…

  1. How do I change the “re-cycle” time after a no motion trigger. It seems like this thing will not re-trigger motion for at least 20 seconds.

  2. Trying this out in my office, and there are times where I’m doing no motion stuff, and it of course turns the light off. With the above time limit and apparently I can’t just wave my hand in the air “like I just don’t care”. :stuck_out_tongue: ) to get it to re-trigger I have to physically stand up in front of this thing…

How are you guys dealing with this type of situation.?

Sounds like you need PLEG to turn off the light after a few min of no motion. Having the sensor turn off as soon and motion is ended will never work on any sensor.

Setup a condition with motion turns on light and starts a timer.

If motion is detected restart the timer

If the timer ever runs down to zero turn off the light.

Timer should be set for 2-5 min usually.

Great advice. I’ll set that and report back.

That said, if the thing cant see me waving my hand all over the place sitting right in front of it, I don’t see how it going to work. I’ll have to stand up every 5 min.

I personally don’t use motions for this reason. Most are not sensitive enough for this use. And that’s due to pets and other reasons why you wouldn’t want false alarms. A hand waving probley wont set it off and if you sitting at a desk or on a couch watching tv your probley gonna have issues keeping the light on with only a motion.

Z-wave or alarm panel motions are not occupancy sensors. They are made for security and made not to have false alarms from a minor movement.

I do use my motion sensors like this (with the smart switch plugin), but only in areas where people would be moving a lot. It is used in my kitchen, laundry room, hallway, and front and back yards. All place as where people don’t often just loiter around.

I also adjust the timeouts depending on the area. The hallway is only 1 minute after the sensor reports no motion (that sensor is set to reset after 30 second of no motion). The kitchen is set for 30 seconds after the sensor reports no motion but they don’t reset until there is 4 minutes of no motion (schlage). The kitchen also has 2 sensors and either one will trigger the lights and both have to be untripped 30 seconds for the lights to go off.

I depend on other factors for rooms where people are not moving around a lot. For the living room it is the TV using the harmony plugin. For bedrooms I merely have one of my KPL buttons trigger an “all off” action that not only turns off the lights and fans but also the TVs in those rooms. I plan to add motion sensor And door sensors to these rooms at some point and try the wasp in a box logic for full automation.
