A package was waiting when I got home today. My missing MP shipment containing amongst others the new MonoPrice zwave shocksensor.
Vera Ui7 → Add Device → Sensors → Glass Break Sensor (Vision VSN-ZS5105)
Start inlcusion on Vera and then insert the battery in the device (keep it close to Vera)
In about 20 seconds Vera found it and added it.
I’m getting tamper alerts from it when I open the case and closing it so it’s talking to Vera. I haven’t tried a real glass break yet as I really don’t want to ruin a perfectly good thermopane window. Especially not with high 80’s temps. I found glass breaking sounds on YouTube. This resulted in below ‘Burglary’ log errors when I played that in front of the sensor:
event N/A Success Glass was broken at 2015-03-11 17:22:27. Reported by serial #xxxxxxxxx device #zzz “” in “Security”. ID #yyyyyyyyyyyyy Storage:
event N/A Success You have received an alert: “”. Device ID: zzz Glass Break Sensor in room: Security The ID is:xxxxxxx Code: Value:1 Serial #yyyyyyyyyy
I’m considering that a successful test. It looks like the timeout for these is the same 5 minutes as for the PIR sensors. I have added the param 1 ‘1 byte hex’ 1 that works for the PIR’s to set the time-out to 1 minute and did not receive an error

Sorry, a bit off topic, but you got tamper alerts? Do you get these for any other devices? Is that UI5 or UI7? I HATE that all my wireless devices have “tamper” alerts, but the the Vera seems to just ignore them!
Vera ignores them it looks like for notifications but they show up in the log. Which I am happy with. I do get the tamper alerts both this one and my door/window and PIR sensors. The PIR’s are all MonoPrice. The door/window ones are both Schlage and MonoPrice.
These are suppose to be shock sensors, correct? Meaning that if someone was to impact/move them hard enough they will trigger. One has to remember that tempered glass will crack but not necessarily shard all over the floor. I have a couple of doors that are full length glass panes. Just curious if they will trigger with something other than noise.
The user manual is now online at MonoPrice (http://downloads.monoprice.com/files/manuals/11988_Manual_141204.pdf) and indicates it detects vribrations made by someone trying to break into a window or door. As said, I tested it with the sound of glass breaking from a Youtube video and it triggered on what sounded like a window pane shattering due to inpact.
Neither the user manual nor the description is very clear on where/how to mount the sensor so I mounted it like most other glass break sensors are mounted, on the opposite wall facing the window. Which is how I tested it as well, facing the computer speaker playing the glass breaking sound.
Most of the REAL glass break sensors are based on an accoustic signature.
They are designed to sense the cracking of the glass … even if it is safety glass …
So heavy wind … flexing your large glass windows should NOT trigger the alarm.
You can buy Glass Break simulator to test your glass break sensors … these emit the appropriate accoustic signature.
Glass break sensors do not have to be mounted on the glass itself … Often a single sensor can be mounted across from a set of windows … protecting the set.
Any way this can set off a alert or notification other than just seeing it in a log? That would mean I would have to check the log to see if something triggered it?
